j5 Create JUC100 Wormhole KM Switch

If you're looking for a simple solution that will allow you to directly transfer files and work on two Windows systems simultaneously, the j5 Create JUC100 Wormhole KM Switch ($29 list) is your best bet. Of course there are free wireless solutions, like Mouse Without Borders, but it's not quite ideal for those of us who are less tech-savvy. The j5 Create JUC100 is a simple plug-and-play solution that connects one computer securely to another?no worries about a break up in connection or pairing issues. But if you're looking to use this device across different platforms (i.e. Windows and Mac OS) then you'll have to opt for j5 Create's slightly more expensive JUC400 ($39.99 list) that supports Windows and Mac operating systems.

Design and Features
The j5 Create JUC100 Wormhole KM Switch is a white cable with a male USB 2.0 interface on either end, of which you'll insert into the computers' local USB ports to connect your two systems. The syncing process is fairly simple: An install window will pop up on both computers after you've connected them, and the software will install in a matter of seconds. The j5 Create JUC100's default transition point is set to moving your mouse to the right edge of the screen to switch to the other computer's screen. You can change these settings by going into the "Show Hidden Icons" on the bottom right corner of your desktop screen. Here you'll find the Wormhole application. Opening it will allow you to set new preferences, like turning the clipboard share options on or off, how you transition into the other computer (via mouse moving to the edge of the screen, specified hot area, or using a hot key, like clicking the mouse middle button), and other settings.

Using the edge of a screen as a transition to the other system was quite smooth. I only ran into trouble when the cursor was hovering close to the edge, when clicking an icon for instance, sometimes it would jump to the middle of the other screen. But this issue is minor; you'll just have to be aware when you're trying to open an application near the edge of the screen.

Performance
According to j5 Create, the JUC100 Wormhole KM Switch can transfer files in 480 Mbps (60 MBps). However, in a drag and drop test, it took the JUC100 Wormhole 24 seconds to transfer a 55.9MB file, which translates to 18.63 Mbps (2.32 MBps)?not quite as fast as advertised. You won't be able to take open browser windows or open applications from one system and drag them over to another like you would in a dual-monitor setup, but this limitation is true for all sharing utilities. You can use one mouse and keyboard connected to one of the systems to navigate, type, and cut/copy/paste text from one computer to the other without issue. There wasn't any lag between keystrokes or mouse movements on the secondary computer, or any missed keystrokes.

If you're thinking of using this utility to play game on one system and work on your thesis paper in another, think again. For some reason? and this issue is the same for all computer syncing utilities?the mouse sensitivity gets rammed up when playing a game. I loaded up Portal 2, for instance, on my Alienware M14x R3 and I was either looking at the ceiling, the floor, or seeing a blur of everything in between for the entire opening sequence.

The j5 Create JUC100 Wormhole KM Switch is the easiest way to directly connect and sync two PCs. It's a great way to transfer data and multitask without having to switch from using one computer to another. However, if you're more tech savvy, there are wireless free solutions out there, like Mouse Without Borders, which is just as good as the j5 Create JUC100.

Warmer weather, less business | WLFI - West Lafayette, Indiana

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - ?

It's good news for drivers, but this unusually mild winter so far has been bad news for some businesses that depend on snow to make their money this time of year.?

?

While many people say they would take weather conditions like Thursday instead of typical winter conditions, Robert Toombs who owns Toombs construction and a snow removal business said he would take snow any day. ? ??

?

"The main reason why I got into snow removal is to offset the slow months in the winter through my contracting business. The bottom line is I bought my salt I did some work to my truck to get ready and now we're just waiting for the snow to come to off-set some of those costs so now we're just waiting for the snow," Robert Toombs, owner of Toombs construction, said. ?

?

Robert Toombs owns Toombs Construction and snow plowing service and said so far this year, his plow hasn't been to work, and his salt supply has barely been touched.

?

"Last year by this time we plowed at least probably around five lots by now so we're definitely behind that mark," Toombs said.?

?

And as one lonely snow man sits in West Lafayette and waits for the next snowfall before it melts, Toombs said he'll also be waiting for the next snow, so that he can get back to work.?

?

"Right now my wife and kids are down in Florida in the warm weather and I stayed home because if it snows I'm obligated to plow my lots but its about 50 degrees right now so maybe I should have gone to Florida," Toombs said.?

?

But Toombs said now, its all up to mother nature on whether or not his business will take a turn for the good.?

?

"Everyone will probably be mad at me but we want the snow so we can get out and use our salt and put our equipment to work," Toombs said.?

The nations weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, December 29, 2011.

Active weather will continue across the northern tier of the nation on Thursday as a very active jet stream sends more disturbances across the North. A cold front extending through the Pacific Northwest and moist westerly flow will move through the Northern Intermountain West, bringing showers, periods of heavy rain, high elevation snowfall, and strong winds to parts of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming Wednesday night through Thursday. Snow accumulations in the mountains are expected to range from about 10 to 20 inches, while snow totals of about 2 to 8 inches are expected in the lower valleys. Sustained winds of 25 to 45 mph with gusts to 60 mph may accompany precipitation in Montana and Wyoming. These conditions may create periods of blowing and drifting snow, reduced visibilities, slick roads, and ultimately hazardous road conditions for travelers. Precipitation from this system is expected to spread into the Dakotas and Nebraska Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, precipitation will continue in the Pacific Northwest through the day, before the next and last system in this series of storms arrives Thursday night into Friday. Expect wet and windy weather with locally heavy rainfall and significant snowfall above 3,500 feet to accompany this system.

In the Midwest, a clipper will slide across North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Lake Michigan with a mix of rain, freezing rain, and snow through the afternoon. Areas of snow will be possible in parts of North Dakota in the morning and in Michigan. Snowfall amounts from this system are not expected to be very impressive. Up to 1 to 2 inches will be possible in parts of northern Michigan.

In the East, a cold blustery day is expected in the Northeast on Thursday as cold air continues to surge in on brisk west winds. Precipitation in region should taper off as high pressure builds in Thursday. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday have ranged from a morning low of -13 degrees at Grand Marais Airport, Minn. to a high of 80 degrees at Ramona, Calif.

The Year In Dirty Energy: Money, Corruption, And Misinformation

It is said that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. That statement has proven itself true time after time in both politics and business, but I would like to amend that statement slightly: Power corrupts, but money and power corrupt absolutely. This year has been no different. We?ve seen unprecedented amounts of money flowing from the dirty energy industry into the hands of politicians in order to achieve everything on their corporate wish?lists.

From near constant hammering of the Environmental Protection Agency, to getting approval for dirty energy projects, corporate money has corrupted every level of politics this year.

I already covered the extensive efforts of the Koch brothers in a previous post, but they are hardly the only culprits who are attempting to undermine democracy and decency by pouring money into politics. Here are a few other stories of interest that DeSmogBlog has covered over the last 12 months:

The biggest ?non-event? for climate denier dollars this year was the Heartland Institute?s ?Denial-a-palooza??conference:

The Heartland Institute gathered a who?s-who of the global warming denial network together in Chicago in May for the fourth International Conference on Climate Change.

As in years past, the event is expected to receive very little mainstream media coverage. The deniers like to think the reason is some liberal media conspiracy. In reality, the lack of interest stems chiefly from the fact that this denial-a-palooza fest is dripping with oil money and represents a blatant industry effort to greenwash oil and coal while simultaneously attacking the credibility of climate scientists.

Despite the lack of press interest, the show must go on. After all, the Chicago meet-up provided deniers and industry front groups a chance to coordinate their ongoing efforts to smear the reputation of the IPCC, and they can reminisce about the Climategate non-scandal like boys in the schoolyard kicking around a rusty old can.

For insight into the underlying aim of the Chicago denier conference, let us take a look at the funding sources for the sponsoring organizations.

19 of the 65 sponsors (including Heartland itself) have received a total of over $40 million in funding since 1985 from ExxonMobil (funded 13 orgs), and/or Koch Industries family foundations (funded 10 orgs) and/or the Scaife family foundations (funded 10 orgs).

This gathering was just the beginning of the massive astroturf campaigns that the dirty energy industry worked on this year:

The oil industry has put their astroturf and lobbying efforts into overdrive over the last few months, preparing for a bitter fight in the upcoming 2012 presidential election. In addition to their usual work of pushing for increased domestic oil production and the opening of federal lands for oil drilling, the industry is working around the clock to convince lawmakers to sign off on the Keystone XL Pipeline that would transport crude tar sand oil from Canada to Gulf Coast refineries.

ThinkProgress reporter Lee Fang has helped uncover some of the oil industry?s recent astroturf tactics at townhall meetings across the country. But the oil industry isn?t just limiting themselves to townhall meetings ? they have also embraced social media as a means to manipulate public opinion. Rainforest Action Network blog The Understory and Mother Jones are reporting that oil industry insiders are creating fake Twitter accounts to tout the need for the Keystone XL Pipeline.

Chris Mooney offered a great analysis of why these astroturf groups have become so important to the industry, and how effective it can?be:

One obvious goal of astroturfing is to shape public policy, and public opinion, in a manner congenial to corporate interests. And indeed, the outrage over astroturfing in a sense presumes that this activity actually works (or else, why oppose it).

Yet there have been few scientific tests of whether the strategy does indeed move people?in part, presumably, because doing a controlled experiment might be hard to pull off. That?s why I was so intrigued by a new study in the Journal of Business Ethics, which attempts to do just that.

Charles H. Cho of the ESSEC Business School in France, and his colleagues, set up a study in which they created (ironically) fake Astroturf websites related to global warming?as well as fake grassroots websites on the same issue?and tested over 200 college undergraduates on their responses to them. To ensure a strong experimental design, only a few things were varied about these websites?what they claimed about the science, and what they disclosed about their funding sources.

Interestingly, when the results were gathered, it turned out that information about the site?s funding source didn?t have any significant effect on the study participants? views. However, readers of the astroturf sites were much more likely to feel that the science of global warming is uncertain, and to question the phenomenon?s human causation.

One finding was particularly disturbing: People found the Astroturf messages less trustworthy overall, and yet were still influenced by them. The most influenced were those study participants who were the least engaged in the climate issue?and thus, presumably, the most vulnerable to astroturf misinformation.

In cases where astroturfing isn?t effective enough at confusing the public, dirty energy companies like Exxon have attempted to just pay scientists to deny global climate change:

The Carbon Brief (TCB) has a nice analysis on the not-very-startling coincidence that at least nine of the top 10 ?skeptical? ?scientists? who are publishing on climate change have direct links to Exxon.

This is interesting, as well, in that it doesn?t account for the increasing amounts of money being invested invested by funders (such as the Koch brothers) who have been taking a less transparent approach than Exxon in acknowledging their links.

In a second instalment, TCB also took a closer look at both the quality and content of the purported ?900+? science papers identified by the Global Warming Policy Foundation as somehow skeptical of the science of climate change. The news, for the skeptics as for the climate, turns out to be all bad.

Only a small number of the papers actually appeared in reputable publications (eg., 34 in Nature, 33 in Science), and many of those either don?t address the climate question directly or do NOT come to the conclusion that the GWPF attributes.

The industry has even tried to push their agenda in our school systems:

Under fire from outlets like The New York Times, the education publishing behemoth Scholastic (of Clifford the Big Red Dog and Harry Potter fame) pulled an energy curriculum sponsored by the American Coal Foundation, which gave a nice PR sheen to coal without bothering to cover, uh, the whole environmental angle. The curriculum had reportedly already been mailed to 66,000 classrooms by the time it got yanked.

What?s currently seeping into classrooms across the country is far, far worse?more ideological, and more difficult to stop. We?re talking about outright climate denial being fed to students?and accurate climate science teaching being attacked by aggressive Tea Party-style ideologues.

Even with the propaganda taken from the schools, the dirty energy industry has found another way to covertly push their misinformation onto the?public:

There appears to be an increasingly sophisticated and planned effort by conservatives and polluter front groups to use ?persona management? software to pollute social media outlets and website comment forums with auto-generated sockpuppet swarms designed to mislead and misrepresent real people.

Leaked emails from Aaron Barr, CEO of a federal subsidiary for HB Gary, disclose the latest efforts and technology used underhandedly for ?ganging up on bloggers, commenters and otherwise ?real? people to smear enemies and distort the truth.?

This phenomenon was first reported by Happy Rockefeller over at Daily Kos.

ClimateProgress is following this issue, particularly when it comes to the online discussion about climate change, noting that readers joke about pre-programmed ?denier-bots? and ?how the same arguments and phrasings keep cropping up in the comments? section of the many unmoderated news sites on the web.?

Public opinion is one thing, but political positions are another. That?s why American Petroleum Institute president Jack Gerard made the following admission this?year:

Oil industry lobbyist and president of the American Petroleum Institute (API) Jack Gerard made his industry?s goal clear in a recent interview with Fortune Magazine. Mr. Gerard said he hopes that in the near future there will be an oil lobbyist on the ground in every U.S. Congressional district in order to help his industry flourish, ?so when a policy proposal hits the industry?s bottom line, lawmakers from Seattle to Savannah will hear complaints about it from voters back home.?

And on the big issues of the year, like the Keystone XL Pipeline, the industry sent their dollars directly to the?source:

After applauding the House?s vote to rush a decision on TransCanada Corp?s Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce launched a new campaign to boost the controversial project. The Partnership to Fuel America is run out of the U.S. Chamber?s Institute for 21st Century Energy, and seems positioned to be the U.S. Chamber?s main influence channel to drum up support for Keystone XL. Supportive comments aside, it?s also the first time the U.S. Chamber has so publicly and overtly aligned with the Canadian company?s project.

And more:

TransCanada Corp, the company hoping to build the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, spent $540,000 on lobbying in the third quarter of 2011, according to lobbying disclosure records released this week.

In addition to $390,000 reported by Paul Elliott, TransCanada Pipelines, Ltd's infamous in-house lobbyist, two outside firms lobbied on TransCanada's behalf to promote the Keystone XL pipeline: Bryan Cave LLP, which reported $120,000 in earnings from TransCanda in quarter three; and McKenna, Long & Aldridge, which was paid $30,000 by TransCanada in the same period.

And when they feared that their generous tax breaks could be repealed, the dirty energy industry sent their best lobbyists to the members of the ?super committee?:

As the so-called ?Super Committee? works to figure out how to trim $1.2 trillion from the U.S. government?s federal deficit, the dirty energy industry has their lobbyists working overtime to make sure that their billions of dollars in annual subsidies aren?t among the items on the chopping block.

Not being ones to miss an opportunity, members on the committee have scheduled dozens of personal fundraisers for their campaigns before that deadline hits. And many of the companies who fear that their subsidies could be cut will be in attendance. After all, the lobbyist blitz contains more than 180 former staffers of members of the Super Committee, so access is not an issue, and no introductions will be necessary.

But money doesn?t always come from lobbyists or special interests; sometimes it comes from the most obvious source: The banks. Alternet has put together a fantastic piece detailing the top 20 banks that have helped fund anti-environmental efforts this?year:

A new study by Urgewald, a German environmental organization, establishes a strong link between large multinational banks and the coal industry, one of the biggest contributors to climate change.

The study (.pdf), "Bankrolling Climate Change," identifies the top 20 "climate killer" banks by the amount of financial support they give the coal industry. Number one is JP Morgan Chase, followed by Citi and Bank of America. That's despite lofty rhetoric from these companies about their work to address climate change.

Building a 600-megawatt coal-fired power plant - a typical size - is going to cost over $2 billion. That's not money that utilities usually have just lying around in the corner. Bank financing pays an important role, either through direct lending or banks organizing capital for utilities to pursue these projects. The two most important roles of banks are as providers of corporate loans for the coal industry and as providers of investment banking services, meaning helping the company to sell shares or bonds. In terms of our calculations of the amounts of money in the "climate killer bank" rankings, we didn't differentiate between these roles. We figured it's secondary whether a bank directly gives its own money or plays an organizing role: This is support the banks give to the coal industry.

So whether the money comes from banks, corporations, or lobbyists, the impact that big money has on politicians and policy is undeniable. Until the funds dry up, we?ll never be in short supply of politicians willing to do the dirty work of the dirty energy?industry.

Beyoncé's Year Of Change Had Us Counting To 4

Our #9 Newsmaker of 2011 touched fans with a VMA baby bump reveal and her most personal album yet.
By John Mitchell

It was a year of change for the long-reigning queen of mainstream R&B, both personally and professionally. Having taken a year off following the 86-date I Am ... Sasha Fierce Tour, Beyoncé re-emerged on the music scene late this spring with the single "Run the World (Girls)." While "Girls" fell squarely in the Beyoncé canon, what she had coming with the rest of her album 4 represented a dynamic and risky change for the superstar.

"My life was award shows and tour buses and hotels, and it kind of goes by so fast. You're getting awards and people are saying how much they respect you and I couldn't even hear it anymore," she revealed in the documentary "Year of 4," which debuted on MTV in June. "I'm just thinking about the next shoot. I'm just thinking about the next video, the next single, the next tour."

She craved change and knew that meant the time had come for some shake-ups in her professional and personal life. The first major change came in March, when she parted ways with her longtime manager, father Matthew Knowles. There were rumors that the split was acrimonious, though both Beyoncé and Matthew insisted the decision was mutual and only "on a business level."

In command of her own career for the first time, Beyoncé began opening up in ways fans had never before seen. 4, which debuted at #1 this summer, turned out to be the most revelatory and personal album of her career, a ballad-heavy meditation on the bliss and impact of being with the one you love. When she did kick up the tempo, the results were joyous jams peppered with blasting horns ("Countdown") and heavy on '90s nostalgia ("Love on Top").

It was during a blistering performance of the latter at the MTV Video Music Awards that Beyoncé revealed one of the biggest surprises of the year. With the final words of "Love on Top" still echoing through Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre, she dropped her mic and unbuttoned her sparkling jacket to reveal a small baby bump, which she rubbed joyously, wearing an ear-to-ear smile that said it all. The crowd went wild, of course, and when the camera cut to Jay-Z, the proud papa-to-be saluted his beautiful wife as pal and the Throne collaborator Kanye West practically jumped on his back with excitement.

Only a star of Queen B's magnitude could make an announcement that set Twitter records and helped the VMAs get their best ratings ever without actually saying a word.

When it comes to the real Beyoncé, the star has always played her cards close to the vest, but this year she brought us in closer. In "Year of 4," she showcased her tireless work ethic, inviting fans into the studio and dance rehearsals. Later, at her intimate dates this summer at New York's Roseland Ballroom, she revealed that record execs feared her debut solo album, Dangerously in Love, had no top-10 hits when it went on to have four, including #1s "Crazy in Love" and "Baby Boy."

So many pop stars seem trapped in time, eternally chasing a hit to beat their last, but not B. For her, 2011 was a year of evolution, one of growth both personal and artistic. She's long been a force to be reckoned with, but now, managing herself and with a new family life in the offing, she is setting the stage for something new and exciting. That she's opened herself up so much to fans is heartening because now we know that no matter where life takes her, we'll be invited along for the ride.

MTV continues our Best of 2011 coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. As we count down the newsmakers that mattered to you most, also check out our Best Artists, Best Songs, Best MTV Live Performances and Best EDM Artists of 2011.

Foxconn Eyeing Record with iPhone Plant Expansion

Foxconn, the Chinese manufacturer, has been an integral partner of Apple in the production of iPhones. The company is now, reportedly, planning to increase the size of its iPhone-producing plant, which currently manufactures more than 200,000 units in one day.

The smartphone plant is situated at Zhengzhou, and if the reports turn out to be true, then Foxconn will gather a place in the Guinness Books as the largest smartphone manufacturing company in the world. As a part of the expansion, the company will be spending $1.1 billion for the construction and other needs.

Foxconn Eyeing Record with iPhone Plant Expansion

The plant will be built in Central China?s Henan province with the base centered at Foxconn Science Park in Zhengzhou. The company believes that they will get $20 billion in sales revenue next year.

After the installation of the new plant, the company?s current production lines are expected to touch a new mark of 95. Foxconn is the world?s largest contractor?of?electronic?components and last year they had opened two new factories in?Henan?and?Sichuan.

This step was taken aiming at the low labor costs and rising markets in the inland provinces. In the currently employed 1.2 million people, about 1 million are based on the Chinese mainland.

As of now, there are 130,000 employees working in the Zhengzhou plant. The company also has a production plant in Brazil, for producing certain iPhone models in the country.

The company is currently rumored to be working on solving the local legal issues for setting up an iPad manufacturing plant based on a $12 billion investment. Foxconn is also expected to start iPad 3 productions from January onwards.

The company looks to be truly advancing through innovations.

Sony ends its LCD joint venture with Samsung Electronics

by Swati on December 26th, 2011

Sony has agreed to sell its 50 percent stake in the LCD joint venture with Samsung Electronics to Samsung for $940 million, the company said on Monday.

The move comes after Sony decided to restructure its TV business, which has been running under loss for the past seven years.

?Under the agreement, Samsung will acquire all of Sony?s shares of S-LCD Corporation, the two companies? LCD panel manufacturing joint venture, making S-LCD a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung,? Samsung said.

The LCD joint venture between Sony and Samsung was established in 2004, when the consumer electronics market was booming. The financial crisis in 2008 then resulted in a slowdown in consumer demand.

?In order to respond to such challenging conditions and to strengthen their respective market competitiveness, the two companies have agreed to shift to a new LCD panel business alliance,? Samsung added.

Samsung?s full ownership of the venture will provide the company with more flexibility, speed and efficiency in panel production and business operations. Sony, on the other hand, plans to exploit its music and video applications and catch up with smartphone leaders such as Apple.

Will retail campaigning help 'the others' rise? (AP)

DeWITT, Iowa ? Rick Perry drew standing-room-only crowds. Michele Bachmann lost her voice. Rick Santorum made a duel pitch _for votes and cash.

And all mixed serious policy talk with everyday chit-chat while doggedly, if not desperately, traveling the state, from Dubuque in the east to Council Bluffs in the west and back again in their individual quests for late-game surges in the Republican presidential race.

Running behind in the polls ahead of the Jan. 3, Iowa caucuses, this trio of conservatives campaigned the old-fashioned way, in town squares, coffee shops and community centers, with routes so well-trodden that they sometimes came within hours of crossing paths in the same city.

"I grew up with snow. I grew up a little farther north than most people realize," Perry told one packed diner here as snow began falling outside ? a Texas governor with a Southern drawl trying to connect with Midwesterners who craned their necks to snap pictures of him. He wandered through the Whisk Away Cafe to talk economics with patrons eating chicken and dumplings. Later, he walked through town and ducked into a barbershop to laugh it up with retired veterans in for a trim.

Hours after that, Bachmann was the center of attention in this eastern Iowa town, speaking to county Republicans at a community center and reminding them, as she does often, that she spent her childhood in Iowa. "This election is our last chance," the Minnesota congresswoman said, delivering a sober message in a raspy voice after shaking every voter's hand. "We cannot afford to get this election wrong. This is our exit ramp."

Bachmann and Perry each logged more than 1,000 miles last week aboard campaign buses that made stops at gas stations and catering companies, sports bars and churches. Santorum, who visited each of the state's 99 counties on his own tour earlier this year, is spending the run-up to the caucuses returning to many of those places.

"Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery," Santorum said, poking at Perry and Bachmann.

The three ? their presidential candidacies likely come down to strong finishes in Iowa_ are betting that Republicans here will reward them for engaging in the hand-to-hand, retail campaigning that Iowans typically demand of White House hopefuls. The leading contenders in polls ? Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul ? have simply bopped into the state on occasion to woo voters rather than planting themselves in the state.

To varying degrees, Romney, Gingrich and Paul have chosen to compete primarily through TV advertising, nationally televised debates and interviews on media outlets like Fox News Channel. And that strategy has seemed to pay off for them; they are clustered at the top of the GOP field ? at least for now.

Little more than a week before the caucuses, the race in Iowa is arguably any candidate's to win given that polls show that many likely caucus-goers are still undecided or willing to change their minds. So, it's not out of the realm of possibility that someone other than those three could get first, second or third place in the caucuses that typically winnow the presidential field ahead of the next-up New Hampshire primary.

To be sure, time is short for them to rise. And, for Bachmann and Santorum at least, money is, too.

Among the trio, Perry is the only one with the cash to run ads ? $4.4 million so far on the air here. Santorum, by contrast, has aired his first TV ad just twice so far for about $24,000, and just rolled out his second spot Friday. And the cash-strapped Bachmann is only just now starting to run radio and TV commercials in the homestretch, her first since before her August straw poll victory in Iowa. In them, she stresses her Christian values and that she's "an Iowa girl from Waterloo." The TV ads offer testimonials from voters she encountered so far on her 99-county tour. Until now, she'd largely been relying on constant interviews with national broadcast outlets to reach voters.

Given the time and money constraints, the candidates have little choice but to canvass Iowa's small towns to find votes with old-school persuasion ? and hope for the best.

Pack a bed and breakfast's living room for a rousing indictment of Washington? Perry is the guy to do it, even though his message isn't breaking through. Pose for pictures at a rest stop? Bachmann does it, even though only a dozen fans show up and she's there just minutes. Challenge Iowans on their knowledge of home-state trivia? Santorum is on it.

The schedules are tough.

In one day, Bachmann made 10 stops ? and a primetime appearance on Fox News Channel.

The voters are skeptical.

Dale Peters, a retiree, followed Perry from business to business hoping to hear him speak and was disappointed, complaining: "Is he going to do anything other than shake hands? People want to hear him, not just see him. So far, all he's done is smile."

For all three, the plea is the same in the closing days of the Iowa caucuses. And it's a humbling one.

"Don't defer to national polls or pundits," Santorum told supporters in an Iowa City living room. And Bachmann told the parents of high school students: "I need your support on Jan. 3 ... We are really going to surprise the nation on Jan. 3, Iowa."

Bahamas Express begins operating between Florida and the Bahamas

FT. LAUDERDALE - The Bale?ria Group marks a new milestone in its achievements with the beginning of the high speed maritime transport service between Fort Lauderdale and Grand Bahama island. The new service, which operates under the Bahamas Express brand, is a firm commitment to the internationalization of the company and also, therefore, to consolidating the company?s growth in the current economic climate.

The fast ferry Pinar del R?o will operate the new service between Florida and the Bahamas, which undertakes the 76 mile crossing in two and a half hours. Bale?ria Bahamas Express operates on a daily basis, except on Wednesdays, departing from Fort Lauderdale at 10:00 and returning at 19:30, allowing US passengers to take day trips to Grand Bahama island.

The President of Bale?ria, Adolfo Utor, highlighted the potential of this area of the Caribbean and explained that it complements the routes which the company operates in the Mediterranean. Utor also pointed out that there is a market of over 200,000 passengers per year on this new route adding that the company is also working on opening another connection to the island of Bimini, also in the Bahamas. He also stated that despite the fact that at present the company only transports passengers, Bale?ria?s aim for the future is to bring to the United States the mixed route model (passengers, vehicles and cargo) that the shipping company works with in Spain. Bale?ria has invested 4 million Euros in the launching of this new route.

"The Bahamas Express service provides an important link between South Florida and The Bahamas" said David Johnson, director general of the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism. "It is an affordable and easily accessible option that appeals to a variety of travelers, particularly families and for those seeking a relaxing and hassle free route to The Bahamas. We look forward to treating guests to our Bahamian hospitality, whether coming for a day or staying for a week."

Bahamas Express provides service between Ft. Lauderdale and Bahamas

The fast ferry Pinar del R?o, which sails at a speed of 32 knots, has a capacity to hold up to 463 passengers. Furthermore, the ship boasts different services such as a bar-cafeteria, duty free shop and tourist class and first class accommodation, among others. This ship sports a design by the well-known fashion designer Custo Barcelona on its hull. The interior will also be decorated with the same graphics, which depict the sea bed and are dominated by bright colors.

Avatron?s Air Dictate App Makes Siri Take Notes On Your Mac

airdictatePerhaps best known for the Air Display iOS app, Avatron is at it again with new app called iOS dictation app called (what else?) Air Dictate. But of course, Avatron wouldn't just cook up a straightforward dictation app -- there's a twist. Instead of just taking your voice input and transcribing it into a file on your iDevice, it actually syncs with your Mac and dumps the interpreted output into your text field of choice. As long as both devices are on the same wireless network, the connection yields quick and (mostly accurate) transcriptions.

US targeted over failure to condemn Israel (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Fourteen frustrated members of the U.N. Security Council are pointing a finger at the United States for blocking any condemnation of Israel's accelerated settlement construction in Palestinian territory.

In a move which Russia called historic, diplomats from all regional blocs represented on the council stepped to the microphone Tuesday to condemn the lack of progress toward a solution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

While the United States was not mentioned by name, their anger was clearly directed at Washington which vetoed a resolution in February backed by the 14 other council members that would have demanded an immediate halt to all settlement building.

The U.S., Israel's closest ally, chose not to speak to reporters.

Wine industry succeeds in recession-weary Michigan

(AP) ? A state thirsting for good economic news is toasting the success of an up-and-coming industry: winemaking.

Vineyards and tasting rooms are springing up rapidly in Michigan, where fertile hillsides near the Great Lakes provide ideal settings for cool-weather varieties such as riesling, pinot grigio and chardonnay. Grape growing and wine making still have only a fraction of the muscle wielded by the automobile industry, but their success is striking given the economic downturn, which hit Michigan years before the rest of the nation.

Eleven wineries have opened in the past year and four others will soon follow, said Linda Jones, executive director of the Michigan Grape and Wine Industry Council. The number of Michigan wineries using fruit grown in state has jumped from 18 to 89 in the past couple of decades.

Dan Matthies, who operates Chateau Fontaine in scenic Leelanau County and is a real estate agent focusing on properties suitable for vineyards, has brokered sales of five parcels this year and says he's flooded with inquiries from people wanting to break into the wine business.

"It is one of the brightest spots we have in the state of Michigan," Matthies said, steering a jouncing pickup through one of his vineyards as laborers snipped bunches of grapes and dumped them into giant crates.

The industry's recent growth reflects, in part, the overall health of the nation's farm economy. Farm income is expected to hit an all-time high this year, and the value of farmland has seen double-digit increases.

A 2007 study found that Michigan agriculture was growing five times faster than the state economy as a whole ? a trend that appears to have continued, said Bill Knudsen, a Michigan State University analyst who wrote the report and is preparing an update.

"The fact that food is a necessity means even though things are bad, agriculture will at least hold its own," Knudsen said. "It isn't completely recession-proof but it comes about as close as you will ever find."

Wine isn't a necessity, of course. But vineyards, like many Michigan farms, have benefited from consumers' growing interest in locally produced foods. Wine sales in Michigan rose 4 percent overall last year, but sales of Michigan-made wines jumped 12 percent. Matthies said that's no accident: Customer loyalty matters in a state where "Buy American" became a rallying cry as imports hammered the auto industry.

"They realize we are literally selling them the fruits of our labor ... and they're supporting us," he said.

During a visit to Chateau Fontaine's tasting room, Joseph Jones of Fife Lake said he's willing to pay more for Michigan wine than for similar varieties from California or Europe.

"We want to see our wineries succeed," said Jones, who isn't related to Linda Jones. "Their quality is excellent, so it's not like we're stepping down."

The recession's most noticeable effect is that people are buying less expensive wines, just as they've settled for hamburger instead of steak, Linda Jones said. They're also buying more bottles at stores to drink at home while cutting back at restaurants, where wine costs more.

"But people drink in good times and bad," she said. "It's an affordable indulgence to have a good bottle of wine with a meal."

Michigan's wine industry also has benefitted from the state's climate. Most of the state's vineyards and wineries are near Lake Michigan in the western corners of the Lower Peninsula, notable for gentle slopes formed by Ice Age glaciers.

The lake has a moderating influence on temperatures near the shore, helping prevent late spring frosts while prolonging mild weather for fall grape harvests. Abundant snow wraps vines in a thick blanket that prevents winter freezing. Hillsides provide generous exposure to the sun during summer growing season.

Vineyards have already gobbled up much of the land suitable for grape growing and the number of good locations left is dwindling, said Paolo Sabbatini, a Michigan State viticulturist. But he also said growers are experimenting with "super-hardy" varieties that could expand significantly the reach of Michigan wine country. For now, about 2,000 of the state's 14,600 acres of vineyards produce wine grapes. The rest are used for juice.

Michigan's reputation for quality wine has surged while its lineup of varieties has expanded. Wineries are now turning highly regarded selections of merlot, pinot noir, pinot blanc, cabernet franc and ice wines, a dessert variety made with grapes frozen before harvesting.

"It's been like an explosion the last couple of years. They've been winning medals left and right, competing across the U.S. and internationally," said Yolanda Daly, director of the Pacific Rim Wine Competition in San Bernadino, Calif. "Beautiful wines are coming out of Michigan."

As word spreads, businesses in Michigan's wine regions reap the benefits. About 1 million people visit the state's wineries each year. They tend to have enough money for dining out, buying gifts and entertainment, said Brad Van Dommelen, president of the convention and visitors bureau in Traverse City, recently named by TripAdvisor.com as one of America's top 10 wine destinations.

The industry pumps about $300 million into the state's economy each year and employs thousands of people in wine production and spinoff jobs in hotels, restaurants and shops.

"We're also making lists of the top foodie towns because of our restaurants," Van Dommelen said. "When you offer a top-quality wine experience along with that, it's huge for tourism ? and for the entire local economy."

Voice control may be cool, but sight control is the way of the future (Yahoo! News)

Is Syria in a civil war?

On Thursday, Navi Pillay, the UN's high commissioner for human rights, said that the nation's political unrest has indeed approached the level of a civil war. Pillay said her assessment stems in part from recognition that elements of the opposition to the Bashar al-Assad regime are increasingly calling for armed resistance. She added that UN estimates of the conflict's death toll--4,000 killed in the past nine months--are likely understated.

"I have said that as soon as there were more and more defectors threatening to take up arms--I said this in August before the Security Council --there was going to be a civil war," Pillay told a news conference in Geneva Thursday, according to a Reuters report. "At the moment, that's how I am characterizing this."

However, it appears that Pillay's is not yet the official UN line. Shortly after she delivered her remarks, her spokesman walked back the characterization, asserting that Syria is, rather, on the "cusp" of civil war, and "heading" in that direction.

"It is definitely heading that way, with more and more reports of armed resistance to the government forces," Pillay's spokesman Rupert Colville told Reuters. "It is on the cusp, but in these circumstances it is hard to say definitively at what point it becomes civil war."

So what prompted the walk-back? And what determines whether the Syrian bloodshed constitutes a civil war?

State Department urges Syria opposition to remain peaceful

The State Department has likewise shied away from Pillay's characterization, noting that the United States has called on both the Syrian regime and the pro-democracy protesters alike to refrain from violence.

"Obviously, we have been very clear in saying that we believe that . . . the opposition needs to remain peaceful," State Department spokesman Mark Toner told journalists at the press conference Thursday.Read More ?

Atlantic hurricane season closes with 19 named storms

From Arlene to Sean, the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season had 19 major storms.?The season saw advances forecasters have made in providing local emergency managers with timely warnings.

The curtain has fallen on the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season ? one that enters the record books in a four-way tie for the third-largest number of named storms on record.

The others: the 1887, 1995, and 2010 seasons.

Tropical Storm Arlene started things off in late June. By the time Nov. 30 arrived, the roster ended with 19 named storms, ending with Tropical Storm Sean in early November.

Indeed, the season might have topped 19 named storms, but forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami didn't catch a blink-and-you'll-miss-it storm in early September that quickly reached tropical-storm status, only to weaken hours later. It spent its brief life well off the US East Coast.

Forecasters noticed the storm as they performed their usual season's-end review of data on Atlantic-basin activity. The review also led to Tropical Storm Nate's promotion to Hurricane Nate.

Although the number of named storms was well above the long-term average of 11, the number of hurricanes and major hurricanes were only slightly above average, according to the center's post-season analysis.

RECOMMENDED: Five things you can do to keep safe in a hurricane

Still, for much of the US East Coast, it was a season to remember.

In late August, Hurricane Irene moved out of the eastern Caribbean and up along the US East Coast. It made landfall three times as it slid up along the East Coast: at Cape Lookout, N.C., at Little Egg Inlet, N.J., as a hurricane, and finally near Coney Island as a tropical storm.

The storm's winds and heavy rains assaulted a landscape along much of the coast and deep into New England whose trees were laden with leaves and whose roots were clinging to soils already saturated from previous rain storms. Storm-felled trees and limbs left 4 million customers without electricity.

From Maryland and Delaware through Maine, 10 states saw record flooding along rivers and streams from Irene's downpours, according to the US Geological Survey, which monitors stream flows.

"Irene broke the 'hurricane amnesia' that can develop when so much time lapses between land-falling storms," said National Weather Service director Jack Hayes in a statement.

All along its path from the Caribbean northward, Irene inflicted an estimated $10.1 billion in damage; the storm reportedly killed 56 people.

Tropical storm Arlene and tropical storm Lee added a combined 46 fatalities to a season that would reach $11.6 billion in damages throughout the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico, and 120 casualties.

The season also showcased the advances forecasters have made in providing local emergency managers with timely warnings. Still, efforts are underway to extend storm-track forecasts another two days beyond the current 5-day outlook while reducing the uncertainties in the forecast.

In addition, researchers have placed a heavy emphasis on understanding the drivers behind rapid changes in storm intensity. Last-minute shifts in strength, up or down, ahead of landfall can have a profound effect on the extent of coastline that needs evacuation.

The efforts are being driven in no small part by analyses showing that between 1900 and 2005, damage from landfalling tropical cyclones in the US doubles every 10 years. Costs are rising as more people move to vulnerable coastal areas, triggering the construction of homes, factories, office buildings, and other assets needed to sustain them.

Canada sees U.S. approving Keystone pipeline (Reuters)

TORONTO (Reuters) ? Canada believes the United States will ultimately approve TransCanada's proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which Washington put on hold last month for more than a year, Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver said on Friday.

Oliver said the project - which would carry crude from Alberta's oil sands to the Gulf of Mexico coast - still makes enormous economic sense for the United States.

"I think it will go through, but obviously later than we had hoped," he told a Reuters editorial board in Toronto.

A recent decision by the state of Nebraska to back changes to the pipeline's route was "a significant development", he added.

Oliver's comments were among the most bullish made by Canada's Conservative government since Washington announced a decision on whether to approve the $7 billion pipeline would be delayed at least until early 2013, after the 2012 U.S. presidential election.

"This delay is not a happy event for us but we're going to continue to talk about the advantages of the pipeline," Oliver said.

Washington's move followed protests by environmental campaigners and Hollywood celebrities, who say exploitation of the oil sands is causing a huge spike in the emission of greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

Oliver said the delay meant it was important for Canada to diversify its oil exports, in particular by developing pipelines to the Pacific Coast, which would allow major shipments to Asia for the first time.

The idea is already sparking friction with aboriginal groups and environmental activists, who say such pipeline would present oil-spill risks in environmentally sensitive areas.

Aboriginal groups in the Pacific province of British Columbia said on Thursday they had formed a united front to oppose all exports of crude oil from the Alberta tar sands through their territories.

Such a ban would create a roadblock for Enbridge Inc's planned C$5.5 billion ($5.4 billion) Northern Gateway oil pipeline, which would transport tar sands crude to the British Columbia coast.

Oliver would not speculate on what the legal implications for the government might be if native communities maintain their opposition to the Northern Gateway or subsequent proposals.

"It has to be built in a way that takes into account the environmental impact and the needs and the wishes of the aboriginal community," he said. "I think that can be done. I'm not saying it will be easy."

Oliver said that developing West Coast oil routes was "an enormous opportunity" for aboriginal groups, offering badly needed economic development, education and jobs.

Rev. Amy Ziettlow: Finding God In Our Midst Through the Muppets

"I was sleeping; don't know if we're in Iowa or Missouri. It all looks the same, caught between the cornfields and snow flurries, I haven't yet arrived, but I'm not just starting, I'm somewhere in between..." "Somewhere in Between" by Storyhill

I'm a sucker for a good travelogue. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, Obi-Wan and Luke Skywalker and gang, the Bundren Family in As I Lay Dying, the brake-less family in a Volkswagon bus in Little Miss Sunshine and the New Testament. I'm sure you have your favorites, too; stories that remind us that in the end the journey is far more important than the destination and that there are important lessons we learn about family, friendship and our ultimate purpose in life that can only be learned on the road.

Our family soaked in the joy of the new Muppets movie last weekend. Harkening back to the original Muppet Movie, the whole gang is on the road to put on a show. My favorite moments are when the Muppets tap into our deepest human desires when on the road, which often entail speeding things up. In the midst of the slog that journeys can become, who doesn't long for a musical montage that quickly and comically highlights the frustrations and requisite overcoming of said frustrations along the way? What child (and adult) doesn't long to "travel by map," where simply placing your finger on the map and tracing a line to where you're going means, "Oila! You are there!" No incessant "Are we there yet?" questioning needed, we are magically and instantly there!

Despite our longing to speed things up, it's in the midst of the hard work of reclaiming the best and redeeming the worst from our past while creating hope for the future out of the necessity of the present that we value the worth of each life gathered around us and we find ways to genuinely communicate that value and love. Each successive year I feel like the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas speeds up and I long for spiritual practices that will slow me down. Each year I am grateful for the season of Advent that bids me to ponder the world by starlight and search for how God is present in the world and people around me. Each year I turn to the devotional book The Advent Sourcebook, a collection of poems, quotes, scripture and hymnody that helps me orient my thoughts and actions towards God and my neighbor each day.

Advent and the Muppet movie reminded of this quote from liberation theology's Leonardo Boff, who writes of the emerging kingdom of God in our midst:

"The reign of God, the eschatological liberation of the world, is already in process, is already being established. It takes shape in concrete modifications of actual life."

When we clean up the theaters of life that surround us, when we sing the songs of our youth with renewed vigor, when we make small choices in word or act that validate the relationships that we are privileged to have in our lives, we catch glimpses of God all around us.
It's time to play the music,
It's time to light the lights...
It's time to put on makeup,
It's time to dress up right...
And now let's get things started,
Why don't you get things started,
It's time to get things started,
On the most sensational, inspirational, celebrational..." Muppets Opening Song
