Google Blocks TwitPic Over Alleged Malware

Google Blocks TwitPic Over Alleged Malware

Something is amiss with Google?s malware detector. It has suddenly identified TwitPic.com as a possible malware threat and is blocking the site by way of Google search engine and also through Google Chrome. TwitPic is contacting Google to rectify the problem.

As such, we?re guessing this is a false positive, and a particularly nasty one at that.

Democrats, Republicans apart on key "fiscal cliff" issues: Reid

New York State Assemblyman Sean M. Ryan announced this week that he?s proposing tougher animal abuse penalties. The legislation, which is being called, ?Phoenix?s Law,? is named for a Jack Russell Terrier who was burned alive by two teenagers in October. ?Phoenix? lived through the ordeal, but is still in a Buffalo animal hospital recovering from burns and broken bones.

Greece uncovers tourism scam, looks for unaccounted millions

ATHENS (Reuters) - Three Greeks were arrested on suspicion of trying to defraud the national tourism board, police said on Saturday, and the finance ministry is investigating a suspected 12-million-euro hole in the state agency's books.

Tourism is one of cash-strapped Greece's few remaining money-spinners and the EOT tourism board is in charge of funding several promotion campaigns and subsidy programs for the industry.

A police statement said a former EOT adviser colluded with at least two accomplices to cash in a forged cheque of 147,000 euros ($194,400) made out to a hotel on the Aegean island of Syros. The three, arrested earlier this week, were put in pre-trial detention after appearing before a prosecutor on Friday.

"They are charged with forming and participating in a criminal organization," the statement said.

The tourism ministry said it was investigating why an EOT chequebook was handled by the 39-year old adviser, who was not a career EOT official but rather an aide to the board's outgoing secretary general, who resigned last week.

Separately, the finance ministry appointed on Thursday a team to investigate what the EOT's new secretary general has called "accounting irregularities" of 12 million euros in the EOT's books.

Cronyism, political meddling and lack of accountability are central causes for the endemic corruption that has bedeviled Greece, leading to fiscal profligacy, financial crisis and an international bailout in 2010.

Greece ranked last among the 27 European Union countries in a global corruption index compiled by anti-graft group Transparency International earlier this year.

The country's governing coalition, which took power in June, has pledged to crack down on corruption, which infuriates citizens who have seen their wages cut and taxes increased as part of its 240-billion euro bailout.

Little time left to head off longshoremen's strike

NEW YORK (AP) ? Shipments of products as varied as flat-screen TVs, sneakers and snow shovels could sit idle at sea or get rerouted, at great time and expense, if more than 14,000 longshoremen go on strike as threatened ? a wide-ranging work stoppage that would immediately close cargo ports on the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico to container ships.

Commerce could be brought to a near standstill at major ports from Boston to Houston if the strike takes place on Sunday, potentially delivering a big blow to retailers and manufacturers still struggling to find their footing in a weak economy.

"If the port shuts down, nothing moves in or out," said Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation. And when the workers do return, "it's going to take time to clear out that backlog, and we don't know how long that it's going to take."

The 15 ports involved in the labor dispute move more than 100 million tons of goods each year, or about 40 percent of the nation's containerized cargo traffic. Losing them to a shutdown, even for a few days, could cost the economy billions of dollars.

In addition to transporting goods, U.S. factories also rely on container ships for parts and raw materials, meaning supply lines for all sorts of products could be squeezed.

"The global economy moves by water, and shutting down container ports along the East and Gulf coasts while the national economy remains fragile benefits no one," Deborah Hadden, acting port director at Massport, the public agency that oversees shipping terminals in Boston. It is not a part of the contract dispute.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said "the livelihood of thousands of Florida families lies in the balance."

The master contract between the International Longshoremen's Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance, a group representing shipping lines, terminal operators and port associations, expired in September. The two sides agreed to extend it once already, for 90 days, but they have so far balked at extending it again when it expires at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

The union said its members would agree to an extension only if the Maritime Alliance dropped a proposal to freeze the royalties workers get for every container they unload. The Alliance has argued that the longshoremen, who it said earn an average $124,138 per year in wages and benefits, are compensated well enough already.

Federal mediators have been trying to push negotiations along, but there has been no word from either side on the progress of the talks since Dec. 24. As recently as Dec. 19, the president of the longshoremen, Harold Daggett, said the talks weren't going well and that a strike was expected.

The work stoppage would not be absolute. Longshoremen would continue to handle military cargo, mail, passenger ships, non-containerized items like automobiles, and perishable commodities, like fresh food.

Joseph Ahlstrom, a professor at the State University of New York's Maritime College and a former cargo ship captain, called container ships the "lifeblood of the country."

"We don't fly in a lot of products. It's just too expensive," Ahlstrom said. "The bulk of the products we import come in inside containers."

The White House has weighed in on the issue, urging dockworkers and shipping companies Thursday to reach agreement "as quickly as possible" on a contract extension. Obama spokesman Matt Lehrich said the administration is monitoring the situation closely.

If it happens, the walkout could be the biggest national port disruption since 2002, when unionized dockworkers were locked out of 29 West Coast ports for 10 days because of a contract dispute.

The ports only reopened after President George W. Bush, invoking powers given to him by the 1947 Taft-Hartley Act, ordered an 80-day cooling-off period. Some economists estimated that each day of that lockout cost the U.S. economy $1 billion. It took months for the retail supply chain to fully recover.

An East Coast port freeze would have its biggest impact at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, where 3,250 longshoremen handled 32.3 million tons of cargo in 2010. The authority is not a party to the contract dispute.

Other major ports affected would include Savannah, Ga., which handled 18 million tons, and Houston and Hampton Roads, Va., which each handled more than 12.5 million tons.

Thousands of other jobs would be directly affected by the shutdown. Truck drivers might not have any cargo to transport, tug boat captains no ships to guide and freight train operators nothing to haul.

Simultaneously, another labor dispute involving dock workers was playing out on the West Coast.

Longshoremen at several Pacific Northwest grain terminals worked Thursday under contract terms they soundly rejected last weekend. The owners implemented the terms after declaring talks at an impasse. The International Longshore and Warehouse Union has yet to announce its next move.

Workplace rules, not salary and benefits, have been the obstacle to a new deal.

The dispute involves terminals in Portland, Ore., Vancouver, Wash., and Seattle, where longshoremen have been working without an agreement since the last contract expired Sept. 30.

The Family Business: Avoid These 4 Lethal Legal Mistakes ? Smith ...

From Brett Lee Shelton, Family Business Lawyer?
If you operate a family-owned business, or are considering starting one up, there are four potentially lethal legal mistakes you should take care to avoid, including:
No employment agreements. Family members who work together are usually hesitant to confront one another if someone isn?t pulling their weight. Having an employment agreement for everyone ensures that expectations for job performance are spelled out and what the grounds are for termination.
Mixing family and business finances. Many family businesses start with loans from various members, and as the business grows, those initial investments need to be protected. This is the stage when you want to consider setting up your family enterprise as a limited liability company (LLC) or a corporation. Most small businesses use an LLC structure, which provides liability protection for personal assets and allows for company profits to flow through to owners.
No licenses. Even if you operate out of your home, you will likely need to obtain a local, state or federal license to operate your family business. While licenses are generally inexpensive, the fines for not having them can be costly. You can find out what the requirements are in your area by contacting your city hall or county office.
No succession plan. Family business feuds can easily occur when there is no succession plan in place. In addition, legally speaking, if a business has not been incorporated or formed as an LLC, the business dies when its owner does. If you started a family business to keep it in the family, you need to follow through with a formal succession plan.
If you?re a small or mid-size business owner, call us at 303-255-3588 today to schedule your comprehensive LIFT? (legal, insurance, financial and tax) Foundation Audit. Normally, this session is $1,250, but if you mention this article and we still have room on our calendar this month, we will waive that fee.

Muslim Clerics Threaten Saudi Labor Minister: We'll Pray You Get ...

Muslim Clerics Threaten Saudi Labor Minister with Cancer Prayers if he Lets Women Work in Lingerie Shops

Saudi woman in lingerie shop (AP photo)

Victoria?s Secret may soon have trouble finding people to sell its stock in Saudi Arabia.

A group of hardline Islamic clerics is threatening the labor minister with ?deadly prayers? if he goes ahead with a plan to create more jobs for women, saying they?ll pray he gets cancer to which his predecessor succumbed two years ago. In particular, they don?t like his ideas about women selling undergarments to other women.

Al Arabiya reports:

During a meeting at the labor ministry on Tuesday, about 200 religious figures accused Minister Adel Fakeih of executing a ?Westernization? plan and asked him to ban women from working in lingerie shops within a month or he will face their dangerous prayers.

Only problem is, King Abdullah last year issued a royal decree prohibiting men from staffing lingerie shops, which leaves the question: Who will sell those sexy undergarments?

Al Arabiya offers more detail on the heated meeting:

One religious man told the minister, ?I supplicated against a senior official at the ministry and he received the (cancer) disease and he died; this was because he began implementing the feminization decision,? according to al-Eqtisadiah newspaper. The man reportedly referred to previous Labor Minister [Ghazi al] Gosaibi.

Another religious figure told the minister that the government?s job is to employ women and not to decide where they should be employed.

Addressing the minister, another man said, ?I am warning you, do not ignite sedition; we only came here to provide advice; your ministry has thrown our daughters in places that don?t suit their values.?

After a wave of attacks the minister finally snatched an opportunity to respond to the bearded men in front of him. He defended the decision to employ women, saying that women occupied jobs during the era of the Prophet Muhammad, adding that it made more sense if women rather than men are in charge of selling women?s lingerie.

The labor minister dug in his heels, telling the clerics if they have a problem with his decision they should take the government to court.

Three years ago, senior Saudi religious figures issued a fatwa barring women from working in the field.

Daniel Greenfield of Front Page Magazine called this the ?real War on Women,? offering this quip: ?But as Obama says, ?The future will not belong to those who slander the lingerie of Islam.??

Earlier this month, more than 100 clerics swarmed into the Labor Ministry objecting to plans to create more jobs for women. Then they complained about rulings which would allow the mixing of genders in the workplace. Of the 1.5 million Saudis looking for work, a whopping 80 percent are women.

But those statistics don?t move hardline religious leaders who warn liberalizing labor laws will lead to ?social disintegration? and the ?Westernization? of Saudi Arabia.

The religious conservatives aren?t holding back their rhetoric to fight what they consider to be the threat of working women. A Saudi cleric last month called waitresses at the local Hardee?s outlets ?prostitutes.? The American chain was also subject to a boycott by hardline Islamists opposing its employment of women.

Saudi Sheikh Ali Al Mutairi posted on Twitter: ?At the beginning of her shift she?s a waitress. When her shift ends she becomes a prostitute. The more she?s around men the easier it becomes to get closer to her.?

Syrian Christians fear bleak future after Assad

BEIRUT (AP) ? With Christmas just days away, 40-year-old Mira begged her parents to flee their hometown of Aleppo, which has become a major battleground in Syria's civil war.

Her parents refused to join her in Lebanon, but they are taking one simple precaution inside their besieged city. For the first time, Mira says, her parents will not put up a Christmas tree this year for fear their religion might make them a target.

"They want to stay to guard the property so nobody takes it," said Mira, who spoke to The Associated Press in Lebanon on condition that only her first name be published, out of concern for her family.

"They cannot celebrate Christmas properly. It's not safe. They are in a Christian area, but they don't feel secure to put a tree, even inside their apartment," Mira said.

Christians, who make up about 10 percent of Syria's population of more than 22 million, say they are particularly vulnerable to the violence that has been sweeping the country since March 2011. They are fearful that Syria will become another Iraq, with Christians caught in the crossfire between rival Islamic groups.

Hundreds of thousands of Christians fled Iraq after their community and others were targeted by militants in the chaotic years after dictator Saddam Hussein was ousted in 2003.

During the Syria conflict, Christians have largely stuck by President Bashar Assad, in large part because they fear the rising power of Muslim hard-liners and groups with al-Qaida-style ideologies within the uprising against his rule. Many Christians worry they will be marginalized or even targeted if the country's Sunni Muslim majority, which forms the majority of the opposition, takes over.

The rebel leadership has sought to portray itself as inclusive, promising no reprisals if Assad falls. But some actions by fighters on the ground have been less reassuring.

This week, the commander of one rebel brigade threatened to storm two predominantly Christian towns in central Syria ? Mahrada and Sqailbiyeh ? saying regime forces were using the towns to attack nearby areas.

The commander, Rashid Abul-Fidaa, of the Ansar Brigade in Hama province demanded the towns' residents "evict Assad's gangs" or be attacked.

Christians and other minorities have generally supported Assad's regime in the past because it promoted a secular ideology that was seen as giving minorities a degree of protection.

The regime and ruling elite are dominated by the Alawite sect, itself a minority offshoot of Shiite Islam to which Assad belongs, but it has brought Christians and other minorities ? as well as Sunni Muslims ? into senior positions.

Christians have flourished under the Assad regime, which came to power four decades ago under Assad's father, Hafez. The regime divided economic privileges among minorities and certain Sunni families in exchange for giving up political power.

The threat of Islamic extremism resonates deeply in Syria, a country with many ethnic and religious minorities, and the regime has used their worries to try to keep their support. Assad has warned repeatedly that the country's turmoil will throw Syria into chaos, religious extremism and sectarian divisions.

Still, Christian activists have also figured prominently among the opposition to Assad, advocating an end to autocratic rule in the country. Christians were among the numerous political opponents that the regime jailed alongside Muslims over the years.

Aya, a Christian artist who has been campaigning against the regime for years, predicted prison won't be enough in the eyes of the rebels to balance the perception of Christian support for Assad. She fears score-settling if the regime falls.

"Many Christians think that this regime is good for us," said Aya, a 51-year-old from Aleppo who fled to Beirut in October. "They think that if they keep quiet, Assad will stay, and protect us. But this is an illusion."

When the government deployed fighter jets to Aleppo to drive back rebel advances in the northern city, they did not spare Christians in the city, Aya said.

"We all got hit, but it's too late now for Christians to change their minds about this regime," Aya said. "I am afraid that now we will pay the price for being silent about this terrible regime all these years."

Even for those who support the rebels, the nature of the opposition has caused ripples of apprehension. As the fight to overthrow Assad drags on, the rebels' ranks are becoming dominated by Islamists, raising concerns that the country's potential new rulers will marginalize them or establish an Islamic state.

Al-Qaida-inspired groups have become the most organized fighting units, increasingly leading battles for parts of Aleppo or assaults on military installations outside the city.

"Most (Christians) want to return (to Syria), but they want to wait until the fighting is over and see who will be ruling Syria after the war," Mira said.

Aleppo's schools are closed. Food and electricity are scarce. Most stores have been shut for months. Even though some areas of the city ? including the predominantly Christian district along Faisal Street ? are still controlled by government forces, the streets are unsafe, she said.

Aya lamented that it's nearly impossible to imagine the country going back to what it was. In the weeks before she fled for good, she said, the violence overwhelmed her.

"There was so much shooting, such terrible bombings, and I could not take it," she said. "In two weeks I slept for 10 hours, I did not eat and I cried all the time, because my city was turning into ruins, and I saw it with my own eyes."

"It brings me great sadness to say that Jason and I are separating. This was an extremely difficult decision that, as a woman and a mother, I have to accept as the best choice for our family," Frankel said in a statement confirmed by her representative.

"We have love and respect for one another and will continue to amicably co-parent our daughter who is and will always remain our first priority. This is an immensely painful and heartbreaking time for us."

Frankel, 42, and Hoppy married in March of 2010. They have a daughter, Bryn, who was born in May of 2010.

On Sunday, Frankel tweeted, "I am heartbroken. I am sad. We will work through this as a family."

Frankel first attracted attention in 2008 on the reality show "The Real Housewives of New York City," which chronicles the exploits of wealthy New York women. She went on to star in two other reality TV shows, "Bethenny Getting Married?" and "Bethenny Ever After...," both of which centered on the couple's marriage and child-rearing.

Frankel also founded the Skinnygirl line of cocktails, and has written several diet and self-help books. In 2012 she launched a talk show, "Bethenny," which is set to air nationally in 2013.

Egyptians vote on disputed constitution

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptians began voting on Saturday in the second and final phase of a referendum on an Islamist-backed constitution, but there was little indication that the result of the vote will end the political crisis in which the country is mired.

The vote comes a day after clashes between supporters and opponents of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria. It was the latest outbreak of street violence in more than four weeks of turmoil, with the country divided first over the president's powers then over the draft constitution.

The clashes ? in which opponents of Islamists set fire to cars and dozens of people were hurt ? illustrated how the new constitution, regardless of whether it is adopted or not, is unlikely to ease the conflict over the country's future.

Saturday's vote is taking place in 17 of Egypt's 27 provinces with about 25 million eligible voters. The first phase on Dec. 15 produced a "yes" majority of about 56 percent with a turnout of some 32 percent, according to unofficial results.

"I came early to make sure my 'no' is among the first of millions today," oil company manager Mahmoud Abdel-Aziz said as he waited in line outside a polling station in the Dokki district of Giza, Cairo's twin city on the west bank of the Nile. "I am here to say 'no' to Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood," he said.

Another Giza voter, accountant and mother of three Sahar Mohamed Zakaria, had a different take on Saturday's vote.

"I'm voting 'yes' for stability," she announced.

Zakaria has an unlikely ally in Fayoum, an oasis province 60 miles (100 kilometers) southwest of Cairo where Islamist groups have traditionally had strong support.

Hanaa Zakim, one of the province's Christians, said she was also voting "yes" for stability and an end to the country's deepening economic problems. Most Christians are seen to oppose the draft.

Speaking as she waited in line along with bearded Muslim men and Muslim women wearing headscarves, Zaki said: "I have a son who didn't get paid for the past six months. We have been in this crisis for so long and we are fed up."

In part, Egypt's split has been over who will shape the country's path nearly two years after the ouster of Hosni Mubarak nearly two years ago.

An opposition made up of liberals, leftists, secular Egyptians and a swath of the public angered over Morsi's 5-month-old rule fear that Islamists are creating a new Mubarak-style autocracy. They accuse the Brotherhood of monopolizing the levers of power and point to the draft charter, which Islamists on the Constituent Assembly rammed through despite a boycott by liberal and secular members. They are calling on supporters to vote "no."

Morsi's allies say the opposition is trying to use the streets to overturn their victories at the ballot box over the past two years. They also accuse the opposition of carrying out a conspiracy by former members of Mubarak's regime to regain power.

If the constitution is adopted, Morsi will call for the election of parliament's law-making lower chamber to be held within two months while giving the mostly toothless upper chamber legislative powers until the lower house is seated.

The upper chamber, known as the Shura Council, was elected by less than 10 percent of the country's 50 million registered voters. It is dominated by Islamists.

Morsi was already gearing up for the next steps after the constitution's passage, making a last-minute appointment of 90 new members to the Shura Council, a third of its total membership. Current rules allow him to do so, but if he waited until the charter was passed he could only appoint 10.

Friday's appointments added to the handful of non-Islamists in the upper house, but preserved the Islamists' overwhelming hold.

A spokesman for the main opposition umbrella National Salvation Front dismissed the appointments, accusing Morsi of setting up a token opposition much like Mubarak did.

NRA calls for armed officers in every school | MyFOX8.com ...

Posted on: 11:27 am, December 21, 2012, by Web Staff, updated on: 05:20pm, December 21, 2012

The NRA held a press conference on Friday to address the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn. that claimed the lives of 20 students and 6 teachers.

At a press event in Washington on Friday, LaPierre said U.S. society has left children ?utterly defenseless? and argued that it?s possible 26 lives might have been saved if there had been armed guards at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

?The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,? said Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association.

Read the entire statement/transcript here.

He also discussed the impact of video games and the media on today?s culture.

LaPierre said ?for all the noise and anger directed at us ? nobody has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now ? in a way that we know works.?

Given federal spending in areas such as foreign affairs, ?Can?t we afford to put a police officer in every single school??

He urged Congress to appropriate money now to put armed guards in every school and advocated school protection programs. The NRA, he said, will be planning a ?multi-faceted? safety program for America?s schools.

A protester interrupted the NRA appearance before reporters with a banner accusing the NRA of killing children. The protester was led out of the room as he shouted anti-NRA slogans.

LaPierre added that violent crime is increasing in the U.S. due to a lack of willing to prosecute such acts and condemned violent video games as a factor in the increase of crime.

He placed blame on media conglomerates, saying their products deliver ?a toxic mix? of criminality ?into our homes? around the clock. But corporate owners and stockholders act as ?silent enablers.? He said the media has ?demonized gun owners.?

He said media outlets report ?untrue? claims about firearms. ?They don?t know what they are talking about,? he said.

A second protester interrupted a statement by LaPierre on Friday with a banner accusing the NRA of bloodshed. ?The NRA has blood on its hands,? the woman shouted as she was led out the room.

After the shooting, a debate over gun control has surged from the public and in Washington. The NRA, an important voice that has been missing thus far, will join the conversation.

Earlier this week, the group released its only statement on the shooting, saying in part that ?the NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.?

One week ago, a gunman forced his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School and shot 20 students, six adults then himself dead in Newtown.

Adam Lanza had killed his mother before arriving at the school.

Some gun-control advocates target ammo clips

Erik S. Lesser / EPA

Ron Moon, co-owner of CJI Guns in Tucker, Ga., holds a pair of 100-bullet-capacity magazines for an AR15 assault style semi-automatic rifle on Wednesday.

By Bill Briggs, NBC News contributor

Anticipating staunch resistance from gun-rights groups to any effort to ban assault-style rifles, some pro-gun control lawmakers are instead trying to leverage the national outrage over the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., to enact federal legislation outlawing high-capacity ammunition clips.

House Democrats, emboldened by President Barack Obama's call Wednesday for quick, "concrete? proposals to curb gun violence, are pushing House Republicans to quickly consider?a ban on high-capacity clips.

The move follows the massacre of 20 schoolchildren and six adults on Dec. 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary school. The gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza carried three guns, primarily using a Bushmaster?XM-15 ? an AR-15/M4-type rifle --?which police said was fed by 30-round magazines. He also was armed with a Glock 10mm handgun and Sig Sauer 9mm handgun. Although authorities didn't reveal the models of those weapons, both of those handguns allow high-capacity clips -- including 15-round magazines for one model of 10mm handgun that's sold by Glock. ?

The bill?s list of co-sponsors this week grew from 113 to 135, according to a spokesman for Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-N.Y., the measure?s author. In 1993, a man armed with a gun and several 15-round magazines shot and killed McCarthy?s husband, Dennis, aboard a Long Island, N.Y., commuter train. Five others also died and 25 were wounded.?

?We've been here before,? McCarty said Wednesday on Capitol Hill. ?All too often, we see these mass killings and yet all our lives go on. Everybody is asking: Is this time different? It is ... This time is different because there is so much anger.?

?We can get the job done,? added House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., one of the bill?s co-sponsors. In an interview Tuesday with NBC?s Andrea Mitchell, Pelosi predicted: ?Right away we could pass ... the ban on the assault magazine.?

Obama demands 'concrete proposals' on gun violence by January

In the other house of Congress, Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J., is simultaneously pushing for a rapid vote on his almost identical proposal to outlaw the possession, import or sale of any ammunition clip that hold more than 10 rounds, saying: ?These high-capacity magazines, which were used in Newtown, Aurora, Tucson, Virginia Tech and so many other tragedies, were designed for one purpose only ? to shoot and kill quickly.?

From 1994 to 2004, high-capacity ammunition magazines were illegal as part of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban, but that provision lapsed when the legislation expired. Congressional Democrats have made several attempts to similar legislation barring possession of rapid-fire assault-style weapons since then, but those efforts have failed.

Legislators also have pushed legislation banning specific types of bullets ? with one notable success:?In 1986, President Ronald Reagan signed legislation that outlawed armor-piercing "cop-killer" bullets.?

But other recent ammunition-cutting proposals have failed to gain traction in Congress. Last summer, a bill filed Lautenberg and McCarthy sought to significantly curb the ability of Americans to buy unlimited amounts of ammunition via the Internet. That bill never made it beyond the Senate Judiciary Committee, a spokeswoman for Lautenberg said this week. ??

So in a country where the right to bear arms is held sacred, firearm foes are refining their pitch to focus on the delivery mechanism. One of their main talking points is asking why such high-capacity clips are necessary.

?I've been a hunter all my life, and there's no reason to have a magazine that holds 30 shells,? said Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Calif. ?Call it what it is: an assault magazine. And we don't have any reason to assault anyone in our communities, in our neighborhoods. ... Why do you need 30 shells in a magazine?"

?Who needs these? The answer is sports shooters,? responds Mark Walters, co-author of "Lessons from Armed America"?and host of a syndicated radio show ?Armed American Radio." ?For example, if you were target shooting or practicing for an upcoming (shooting competition), it?s nice not to have to change magazines on a regular continual basis."

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the National Rifle Association held a news conference in Washington, D.C, on Friday and blamed the media and video games for cultivating a culture of violence.

What?s more, many ranchers use firearms like AR15s ? manufactured to carry 30-round magazines???to protect their herds from coyotes and clear their land of prairie dogs, added George Hill, an employee at Basin Sports in Vernal, Utah.

The talk of banning ?assault magazines? emanating from Washington appears to be driving sales of the high-capacity clips, according to Walters and Hill.

??I came in at 8 this morning and I have been non-stop on selling AR15s and ammo. Nonstop,? Hill said Wednesday afternoon. ?Those (30-round clips) have been going out, and I?ve been selling those two, three, 10 at a time. Everybody?s worried about the politics behind it and that?s generating a lot of these sales. They?re worried about it being banned.

?I would be real happy to only sell Benelli goose-hunting guns and Browning deer rifles. And that?s normally what we sell this time of year. But the politics has super-heated the tactical market. Normally, I sell somebody 50 rounds, maybe 100 pounds. Instead, I?m selling them 500 or 1,000 rounds.?

While Walters and Hill each oppose the proposed ban on high-capacity clips in principle, they argued as well that such a crackdown won?t slow gun violence in this country.

?This is all symbolic legislation that will do nothing. Absolutely nothing. If I could say something different, I would admit that,? Walters said. ?But the facts don?t bear that out. It?s just feel-good legislation being backed into a horrible event.?

They note that gun ownership has increased over the past decade, with the number of instant criminal background checks conducted by retailers required by federal law rising each year. In November alone, more than 2 million such point-of-sale investigations were performed nationally on people seeking to purchase firearms???the most in any single month since federal officials launched the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) in 1998, according to the FBI. By comparison, gun retailers and federal authorities completed 842,932 background checks in November 2003.

?There are millions of rounds of ammunition already in the public?s hands???high-capacity or standard-capacity magazines already in the public's hands,? Walters said. ?If they pass this ban, in the days prior to the date (it goes into effect), stores will sell 10 years? worth of these capacity magazines.

?But beyond that, it?s irrelevant. A seasoned, experienced firearms enthusiast, including myself, can change a magazine out, including a tactical reload, in under a second,? Walters said.

Moreover, such ammunition doesn?t degrade over time, he added.

?It?s a plastic magazine with a spring. Magpul (based in Erie, Colo.) makes the most popular 30-round magazines, PMAGs, which are selling for $13.99,? Walters said. ?I have five of them being reserved at my store because they?re selling like crazy. I know I could keep them in my safe forever. I can open it in 20 years, take it out of the plastic bag, and if I want to use it, I can use it.?

Any federal ammo ban???or mandated purchase limits on certain clips or bullets???would simply create an ?underground market,? Hill said. Today, scores of gun enthusiasts???including many hunters???make their own bullets as a hobby. They?re called ?reloaders.?

?People have been making ammunition themselves since the 1880s. That?s something anybody is capable of doing with a little bit of know-how,? Hill said. "Those kinds of bans are like throwing a steak on the grill for like 10 seconds and calling it cooked. It just looks like it?s cooked but it?s not.

?You can reload. Or, you can order online and get stuff from outside the U.S. It?s too late for any of that,? Hill said. ?And it never works.?

'Gangnam Style' Reaches 1 Billion Hits On YouTube, A First For The Video-Sharing Network

The thunderous gallop of the viral hit "Gangam Style" cannot be stopped.

Less than a month after becoming the most-watched YouTube video in history, Psy's music video became the first ever to surpass 1 billion views on the Google-owned video website.

As of Friday morning, the video had notched almost 400,000 views above that 10-figure threshold.

gangnam style 1 billion

It's as much a milestone for the Korean pop star -- who's earning piles of money off of all those clicks -- as it is for YouTube. "Gangnam Style" is arguably best-known song of 2012, and it's hard to imagine the song that will earn that distinction in 2013 of getting this kind of recognition without a lot of help from YouTube or another online platform.

NRA Press Conference Post-Sandy Hook School ... - Business Insider

AP

In what was a rather stunning, half-hour press conference, the National Rifle Association called on Congress to put armed police officers in every school in America. The highly-anticipated press conference came one week after the tragedy in Newtown, Conn. last week.

CEO Wayne LaPierre blamed many things in his press conference for the influx of mass shootings in the U.S. ? everything from gun-free school zones, the media, movies, violent video games, hurricanes, and a lack of government funding.

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," LaPierre said.

At the same time, he deflected any criticism the organization has taken over the past week, saying the organization "remained respectfully silent." He was interrupted by two separate protestors at the event, after which the NRA did not take questions.

LaPierre said that the NRA is calling on Congress to put armed security guards in every school. The NRA has set up a website to advance the cause.

"The only way ? the only way ? to stop a monster from killing our kids is to be personally involved and invested in a plan for protection," LaPierre said. He added that gun-free zones "tells every killer that schools are the safest place" to go and carry out mass shootings.

LaPierre questioned what would have happened if there were armed security at the school:?

"What if, when Adam Lanza started shooting his way into Sandy Hook Elementary School, he was confronted by qualified armed security? ...?26 innocent lives might have been spared that day," he said.

LaPierre also blamed lack of government funding.

"With all the foreign aid ? with all the money in federal budget ? can't we afford to put a police officer in every school?"

A lesser part of his speech placed blame on a media culture that he suggested promoted violence. He took aim at celebrities, video games, and movies for advancing that culture.

"Another little dirty secret the media tries to conceal," LaPierre says, is "a callous corrupt and disgusting shadow industry ... vicious violent video games." He then called violent films "the filthiest form of pornography."

"Then there?s the blood-soaked slasher films like 'American Psycho'?and 'Natural Born Killers' that are aired like propaganda loops on 'Splatterdays' and every day," he said, "and a thousand music videos that
portray life as a joke and murder as a way of life."

Here's a photo of the first protester that interrupted LaPierre. Her sign read, "WE NEED TO STOP THE KILLING, THE NRA IS KILLING OUR CHILDREN:"

And the second protestor gets carried out:

Military satellite heads skyward

A powerful new telecommunications satellite for the UK military has blasted into orbit.

The five-tonne Skynet-5D platform was sent up on an Ariane rocket from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana.

It complements three others already in operation, enabling British forces to stay connected over most of the globe.

The Skynet system, which includes the radio equipment deployed on ships, on vehicles and in the hands of troops, is the UK's single biggest space project.

It is valued at up to ?3.6bn over 20 years and is run by a commercial company, Astrium, in a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) with the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

UK forces pay an annual service charge for which they get guaranteed bandwidth, with spare capacity then sold to "friendly forces". These third party customers include the Nato allies such as the US.

The Ariane left the ground at precisely 18:49 local time (21:49 GMT) and dropped off Skynet-5D 27 minutes later over the east coast of Africa. 5D will now use its own propulsion system to move into a geostationary position at an altitude of 36,000km. The eventual operating position early next year will be at 53 degrees East.

The first three spacecraft in the Skynet series were launched in 2007-2008. They all match the sophistication of the very latest civilian platforms used to pass TV, phone and internet traffic, but have been "hardened" for military use.

Classified technologies on board will resist, for example, attempts to disable the spacecraft with lasers or to "jam" their operation with rogue signals.

Jonathan Amos was given special access to Skynet-5D before its launch

Putting a fourth spacecraft in the fleet gives some assurance to the MoD that a basic service can be maintained through this decade even if there is a failure in orbit of one or two satellites.

5D is largely a clone of 5A, 5B and 5C, and even includes a number of spare parts held in reserve.

"From a distance you would not be able to tell the difference between them all," said Van Odedra, the Skynet programme manager at Astrium, Europe's biggest space company.

"It is inside though that there have been some subtle changes in terms of the configuration - particularly the UHF payload. We were able to introduce some design changes to be able to provide more than double the number of channels compared with 5A, 5B and 5C."

UHF (Ultra High Frequency) is much in demand. The frequency supports "comms on the move" - soldiers in forward deployments with backpack radios, and the like.

The MoD wants more of it and Astrium is keen to be able to sell additional capacity to its third-party customers.

A lot of key encrypted data will go through the satellite's X-band (SHF, Super High Frequency) payload.

Astrium intends to purchase further X-band capacity on a Canadian satellite launching next year. This will be positioned over the Americas and when combined with Skynet's own X-band offering will give UK forces coverage from 178 West to 135 East - near global coverage.

Antarctic support

Although principally a military system, Skynet is finding use also in civilian sectors.

"Using Skynet, we also support something called the High Integrity Telecommunication System (HITS) for the UK Cabinet Office," explained Simon Kershaw, executive director of government communications at Astrium Services.

"HITS is a civil-response, national-disaster-response capability. It was deployed during the Olympics. It provides emergency comms support. The network runs from police strategic command centres across the UK into the crisis management centres, and into government as well," he told BBC News.

"And we still fly three of the old Skynet-4 satellites, one of which is now 22 years old - not bad for a design life of eight years.

"Skynet-4C is now in such an inclined orbit that we offer several hours of coverage over the South Pole each day. It's a niche and unique capability for what is a geostationary satellite." The British and American Antarctic operations make use of this service.

5D represents probably the completion of the current generation Skynet system. Already, Astrium is in discussion with the MoD about the shape of a possible follow-on.

It is not clear just yet what the military's requirements will be in the 2020s but it is almost certain to include some satellite capability.

Whatever happens, those spacecraft still working at the end of the Astrium contract will pass to the ownership of the MoD for the sum of ?1.

Ariane's second "passenger" for Wednesday's flight was the three-tonne Mexican telecommunications platform Mexsat Bicentenario. It was released by the rocket's upper-stage 36 minutes after launch.
