T-Mobile to tighten the purse strings, limit data roaming starting April 5th

T-Mobile to limit data roaming starting April 5th
We've just come across an internal T-Mobile memo that will certainly give a few customers a moment of pause: come April 5th, it seems the carrier will impose new, restrictive limits that affect data usage when roaming. Hot on the heels of the network's roaming pact with AT&T, the change would restrict subscribers to a fixed allotment of roaming data that's proportionate to their current data plan. While most customers are unlikely to notice the change, it's almost certain that some will be left out in the cold. Once the roaming limit is met, users will be unable to consume any additional data on non-Magenta networks until the start of a new billing cycle. T-Mobile suggests the move is in effort to keep its prices competitive, but one thing is for certain: it's hardly the Full Monty.

Economic protester tased at park near White House (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Park police used a Taser to subdue an anti-Wall Street protester during an arrest at a park near the White House on Sunday as tension rose ahead of a police order for the demonstrators to stop camping in the parks overnight.

"He was arrested for disorderly conduct. In the course of the arrest he was tased," Park police spokesman David Schlosser said, adding that he had no additional information on the man who was taken into custody.

The National Park Service has said it will begin enforcing a ban on Occupy protesters from camping in McPherson Square and Freedom Plaza, two parks just blocks from the White House where they have been living since October.

That order, if carried out as promised starting at noon on Monday, could be a blow to one of the highest-profile chapters of the movement, which denounces economic inequality.

Earlier on Sunday, Park Police posted notices on tents indicating their intent to start enforcing a ban on sleeping in the park overnight, the Washington protest group said.

A spokeswoman for the movement said police singled out, detained and tased a man who goes by the name "Lash" after protesters began removing the notices from tents. The group posted video of the incident on its website.

Sara Shaw, 24, said the group would "maintain a presence in the park," but she did not indicate whether Occupy members intended to defy the camping restrictions.

The so-called "Occupy" protests against economic inequality began last year in New York and have spread across the country. More than 400 people were arrested on Saturday night in Oakland, California during clashes with police. But protests have been peaceful in most cities, including Washington.

Gingrich wants panel to look at in vitro clinics (AP)

LUTZ, Fla. ? Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich called Sunday for a commission to study the ethical issues relating to in vitro fertilization clinics, where infertile women receive treatment to get pregnant and large numbers of embryos are created.

"If you have in vitro fertilization you are creating life. And therefore we should look seriously at what should the rules be for clinics that do that because they're creating life," said Gingrich, who opposes abortion and says life begins at conception.

Gingrich, who is campaigning for votes in Tuesday's Florida primary, did not expand on his proposal for a commission. His remarks seemed to open the possibility of a larger federal role over IVF clinics across the country than currently exists.

Standing outside the Exciting Idlewild Baptist Church, where he had attended Sunday worship services, Gingrich also said he opposes the use of leftover embryos for stem cell research, which advocates say offers the hope of treatments or even cures for a variety of diseases.

The issue of stem cell research has become politically charged over the past decade, as scientific technique has advanced.

Former President George W. Bush, who opposed abortion rights, signed an executive order in 2001 that said federal funds could be used for stem cell research only on lines that were already in existence, which scientists subsequently said had been compromised.

President Barack Obama, who supports abortion rights, jettisoned Bush's restrictions on federal funding for stem cell research after taking office.

In vitro fertilization involves creating an embryo outside a woman's body, then implanting it inside the womb. Excess embryos may be stored at the clinic, discarded, used for research or made available to other couples. A study nearly a decade ago estimated there were as many as 400,000 in existence.

'Black Smoker' Vents: New Species Discovered Near Deepest Undersea Hot Springs (PHOTOS)

The discovery of the deepest known "black smoker" vents has revealed eyeless shrimps and white tentacled anemones living 3.1 miles below the surface in a Caribbean rift.

The vents, which shoot "jet[s] of mineral-laden water" almost a mile into the ocean and may be hotter than 842 degrees Fahrenheit, were found on the slopes of an undersea mountain known as Mount Dent, according to a press release from the National Oceanography Centre. The discovery was recently published in the journal Nature Communications.

Dr. Doug Connelly, a marine geochemist at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton and co-leader of the discovery team, said, "Hot and acidic vents have never been seen in an area like this before, and usually we don't even look for vents in places like this."

Connelly's co-leader, marine biologist Dr. Jon Copley of the University of Southampton, further explained the rarity of this discovery. He said, "One of the big mysteries of deep-sea vents is how animals are able to disperse from vent field to vent field, crossing the apparently large distances between them."

Other strange animals have been found living around deep sea vents in recent years. During a 2010 expedition conducted by British scientists, a new type of yeti crab, nicknamed The Hoff, was discovered along the Southern Ocean floor near Antarctica.

It's not just new species that have been discovered recently. A new island was found in recent weeks thanks to a underwater volcano eruption in the Red Sea in mid-December. Scientists are saying a new land mass 2000 feet across on the northern edge of the Zubair Islands is here to stay.

Check out these photos of the black smoker vents and animals from the depths of the ocean.

Stocks slip after US economic growth disappoints (AP)

NEW YORK ? Stocks were drifting lower Friday after the government reported the U.S. economy grew at a slower pace than economists had expected in the fourth quarter.

If prices don't reverse, the Dow Jones industrial average will end the week down, the first time that's happened in 2012. The Dow has risen for three weeks in a row and is up 4 percent this year.

The Dow fell 80 points, or 0.6 percent, to 12,656 at noon. The S&P 500 index fell 4 points to 1,314. The Nasdaq composite edged up 5 to 2,810.

The Commerce Department said the economy grew at a 2.8 percent annual rate in the final three months of last year. Economists had expected 3 percent growth.

Among stocks making big moves, Chevron Corp. fell 3 percent, the most of the 30 stocks in the Dow average, after the energy company's fourth-quarter revenue and earnings per share came in well below what analysts were expecting. Oil and natural gas production declined in the quarter.

The declines were broad, with all ten sectors of the S&P down.

Ford Motor Co. fell 3 percent after reporting disappointing fourth quarter earnings due to weak sales in Europe. The company said its results were also hurt by trouble at parts suppliers in Thailand due to flooding there.

Starbucks Corp. fell 2.6 percent after reporting late Thursday that that full year results were likely to come in less than expectations. Procter & Gamble Co., which makes Tide, Crest and other consumer products, fell 1 percent after cutting its earnings outlook.

Legg Mason fell 6 percent after the investment management company's earnings fell in half as clients pulled money out of the firm. Legg Mason's earnings of 20 cents per share were well below the 25 cents per share that analysts were expecting, according to FactSet.

NASA Telescope Discovers 26 Alien Planets Around 11 Different Stars (SPACE.com)

NASA's prolific planet-hunting spacecraft has hit the jackpot again, discovering 11 new planetary systems with 26 confirmed alien planets among them.?

The findings nearly double the number of bona fide planets found outside our solar system by the Kepler space observatory.

"Prior to the Kepler mission, we knew of perhaps 500 exoplanets across the whole sky," Doug Hudgins, Kepler program scientist at NASA headquarters in Washington, said in a statement. "Now, in just two years staring at a patch of sky not much bigger than your fist, Kepler has discovered more than 60 planets and more than 2,300 planet candidates. This tells us that our galaxy is positively loaded with planets of all sizes and orbits."

The newly detected worlds vary in size from 1.5 times the radius of Earth to larger than Jupiter; 15 of the 26 planets fall between Earth and Neptune in size. While all of the planets tightly orbit their parent stars, more research will be required to determine which worlds are rocky like Earth, and which have thick, gaseous atmospheres like Neptune, the scientists said.

Still, all of the 26 new planets orbit closer to their stars than Venus does to our sun. This means that their orbital periods ? or the time it takes for them to complete one orbital lap around the star ? range from ?six days to 143 days, according to the researchers. [Gallery: A World of Kepler Planets ]

By studying these different planetary systems, scientists can glean valuable information about how planets form.

Hunting for planets

The Kepler spacecraft, which orbits the sun, stares at a patch of sky that contains 150,000 stars and locates potential alien planets by measuring the tiny change in brightness that occurs when a planet transits ?that is, passes in front of ?a star.

Once a planetary candidate is identified, further observations are conducted by ground-based observatories to weed out the false positives.

"Confirming that the small decrease in the star's brightness is due to a planet requires additional observations and time-consuming analysis," Eric Ford, associate professor of astronomy at the University of Florida, explained in a statement.

Ford is the lead author of a study that confirms two of the new systems, Kepler-23 and Kepler-24.

"We verified these planets using new techniques that dramatically accelerated their discovery," Ford said.

Each of the newly found planetary systems holds two to five closely spaced transiting planets, the researchers said. Since these systems are tightly packed, the planets exert gravitational forces on one another, speeding up or slowing down their orbits. The orbital period of each planet is altered in the process.

By measuring the orbital changes, Kepler can identify potential planets in the system. This method, known as Transit Timing Variation, can be used to verify alien planets without extensive ground-based observations. The technique also increases Kepler's ability to confirm planetary systems around fainter and more distant stars, the researchers said. [Video: Kepler Reveals Lots of Planets: Some Habitable?]

"By precisely timing when each planet transits its star, Kepler detected the gravitational tug of the planets on each other, clinching the case for 10 of the newly announced planetary systems," Dan Fabrycky, of the University of California, Santa Cruz, said in a statement.

Fabrycky is the lead author of the paper that confirms the Kepler-29, -30, -31 and -32 systems.

Alien planets and their host stars

Five of the systems (Kepler-25, -27, -30, -31 and -33) contain a pair of planets, the inner one circling its star twice in the time it takes the outer planet to make one lap.

Four of the systems (Kepler-23, -24, -28 and -32) are home to a pair of planets where the outer one orbits the star twice for every three times the inner planet circles the parent star.

"These configurations help to amplify the gravitational interactions between the planets, similar to how my sons kick their legs on a swing at the right time to go higher," Jason Steffen, a postdoctoral fellow at Fermilab Center for Particle Astrophysics in Batavia, Ill., said in a statement. Steffen is the lead author of a paper confirming the Kepler-25, -26, -27 and -28 systems.

The system with the most planets is Kepler-33. The star, which is older and more massive than the sun, hosts five planets that range in size from 1.5 to five times that of Earth. All of these planets orbit closer to their star than any planet circles our sun.

Once the properties of a star are understood, such as the telltale light signature of a planet crossing in front, it becomes easier to eliminate false positives, the researchers said.

"The approach used to verify the Kepler-33 planets shows the overall reliability is quite high," said Jack Lissauer, planetary scientist at NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, Calif., and lead author of the paper on Kepler-33. "This is a validation by multiplicity."

The newly discovered planets increase the Kepler mission's tally of confirmed planets to 61, with 2,326 other planetary candidates.

The four separate papers appear in the Astrophysical Journal and the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Notion in Motion: Wireless Sensors Monitor Brain Waves on the Fly

eeg, brain, interface, game"TIP OF THE ICEBERG": NeuroSky, Inc.'s brain-computer interface shown here just scratches the surface of what is possible thanks to advances in mobile electroencephalographic brain-wave detection technology, says University of California, San Diego's Scott Makeig. Image: Courtesy of Neurosky, Inc.

A fighter pilot heads back to base after a long mission, feeling spent. A warning light flashes on the control panel. Has she noticed? If so, is she focused enough to fix the problem?

Thanks to current advances in electroencephalographic (EEG) brain-wave detection technology, military commanders may not have to guess the answers to these questions much longer. They could soon be monitoring her mental state via helmet sensors, looking for signs she is concentrating on her flying and reacting to the warning light.

This is possible because of two key advances made EEG technology wireless and mobile, says Scott Makeig, director of the University of California, San Diego's Swartz Center for Computational Neuroscience (SCCN) in La Jolla, Calif. EEG used to require users to sit motionless, weighted down by heavy wires. Movement interfered with the signals, so that even an eyebrow twitch could garble the brain impulses.

Modern technology lightened the load and wirelessly linked the sensors and the computers that collect the data. In addition, Makeig and others developed better algorithms?in particular, independent component analysis. By reading signals from several electrodes, they can infer where, within the skull, a particular impulse originated. This is akin to listening to a single speaker's voice in a crowded room. In so doing, they are also able to filter out movements?not just eyebrow twitches, but also the muscle flexing needed to walk, talk or fly a plane.

EEG's most public face may be two Star Wars?inspired toys, Mattel's Mindflex and Uncle Milton's Force Trainer. Introduced in 2009, they let wannabe Jedi knights practice telekinesis while wearing an EEG headset. But these toys are just the "tip of the iceberg," says Makeig, whose work includes mental concentration monitoring. "Did you push the red button and then say, 'Oops!' to yourself? It would be useful in many situations?including military?for the system to be aware of that."

That kind of "mental gas gauge" is just one of many projects Makeig is running at the SCCN, which is part of U.C. San Diego's Institute for Neural Computation (INC). He also combines mobile EEG with motion-capture technology, suiting volunteers in EEG caps and LED-speckled spandex suits so he can follow their movements with cameras in a converted basement classroom. For the first time, researchers like Makeig can examine the thoughts that lead to movement, in both healthy people and participants with conditions such as autism. Makeig calls the system Mobile Brain/Body Imaging, or MoBI. It allows him to study actions "at the speed of thought itself," he says.

EEG does not directly read thoughts. Instead, it picks up on the electrical fields generated by nerves, which communicate via electricity. The EEG sensors?from the one on the Star Wars games to the 256 in Makeig's MoBI?are like microphones listening to those microvolt-strength neural signals, says Tansy Brook, head of communications for NeuroSky Brain?Computer Interface Technology in San Jose, Calif., makers of the chip in the Star Wars toys and many other research, educational and entertainment products.

For one project, Makeig is collaborating with neuroscientists Marissa Westerfield and Jean Thompson, U.C. San Diego researchers studying movement behavior in teenagers with autism. They put the teens, wearing the EEG sensors and LEDs, in Makeig's special classroom. Then, they project a spaceship on the walls. The kids have to chase the spaceship as it darts from one point to another. Although the results are not yet in, Westerfield suspects that people with autism, compared with those who are non-autistic, will take longer to process where the spaceship has gone and readjust their movements toward it. "If we had a better idea of the underlying deficits?then we could possibly design better interventions," such as targeted physical therapy for the movement problems autistic people have, Westerfield says.

Neuroscientists and psychologists have been using EEG to eavesdrop on brain waves since 1926, and doctors employ it to study sleep patterns and observe epileptic seizures. During most of that time, subjects had to sit in an electrically shielded booth, "like a big refrigerator," says John Foxe, a neuroscientist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. He calls Makeig's MoBI "technical wizardry" that will enable scientists "to watch the brain and how it works in much more realistic settings."

Wireless EEG has already had an impact on gaming. San Francisco?based Emotiv has since 2009 sold its EPOC EEG headset, which uses electrical signals to determine a player's emotional state?excitement, frustration and boredom each create a different pattern. Gamers using Emotiv's technology can also create mental "spells" to lift or push virtual objects, says Geoff Mackellar, CEO of Emotiv?s research unit based in Sydney, Australia. The EPOC is also regularly used in research labs and may have medical applications in the future, Mackellar adds.

Wireless EEG technology provides signals as clear as the wired version, Makeig says, and at about 3.5 kilograms his machinery is "luggable." (Emotiv's and NeuroSky's headsets, which use fewer electrodes, are lighter.) "Of course, we're not starting with ballet dancers doing The Rite of Spring," he admits, but the team has succeeded with joggers on a treadmill. One challenge they would still like to overcome is to remove the sticky, conductive gel that goes under each electrode. It can certainly be done?Emotiv's electrodes use only saltwater and NeuroSky's are dry.

Tzyy-Ping Jung, associate director of the SCCN, predicts the group will make a dry, 64-electrode system within a couple of years. He and Makeig envision the headset will help paralyzed people interact with the world, warn migraine sufferers of an impending headache, and adjust computerized learning to match a student's personal pace, among other potential applications.

"It's certainly something that everyone can have at home," Emotiv's Mackellar says.

Alfred (for Mac)

Alfred (for Mac) (free, power pack upgrade available for ?15GBP) sat installed but hardly used on my Mac at home for nearly two months before I figured out why I would want to use it. But one day I launched it and I awoke to its possibilities. Now, Alfred is indispensible for increasing productivity and reducing mouse-related repetitive motions. Alfred works so simply and cleanly that it's possible to install it on a whim (seeing as it doesn't cost a dime), and never take the five minutes to figure out what it can do for you. Sure, you might understand how it works and what it does in an instant, but until you experience an awakening about how it can increase your productivity and change the way you interact with your computer, Alfred could largely hang around, unused and overlooked.

The above paragraph may sound a tad overzealous for what is a very simple and straightforward application, but it's meant to drive home a point. Alfred only becomes worthwhile when you figure out what your use case for it is. You can deploy Alfred for a number of different purposes, but until you find the few that speak to your daily work and typical computing patterns, you probably won't think much of Alfred. The program replicates a lot of functionality that's already available to Mac users in Spotlight, the built-in tool (since OS 10.4) for searching your computer for applications and files. But Alfred works a little differently, is faster, and for many other reasons is a preferable tool for many users.

Alfred for Mac System Requirements
Alfred for Mac version 1.0 is compatible with Intel Macs running OS X 10.6 and higher. The developers, Running with Crayons, report optimal results with Lion (10.7). A download is available for Leopard (OS X 10.5) for both Intel and Power PC Macs. See Alfred's requirements page for further details.

Alfred Hotkey
Alfred's primary purpose is to enable simple yet powerful keyboard shortcuts for searching your computer and launching application and files. You can keep the default hotkey to toggle to Alfred, or set your own. I used option + space bar.

The hotkey will pull Alfred's search bar?a relatively small and unobtrusive box on the screen, with legibly large font for characters?which you then use to search your computer for applications or files, or search online. Type any characters in the field and Alfred will match them to programs and files that contain that combination of letters. Press enter or the down arrow key or the keyboard shortcut shown at the right of the item you want (see the slideshowfor an image), and Alfred launches the application or file.

Type "Tw," and Alfred might suggest launching Twitter in a Web browser. It will also suggest any files, including program applications, on your computer that use the letters, such as the "iTwin installer" or an entry in your address book for "Mark Twain." Alfred can also track your patterns and learn from your behavior. After using Alfred only a handful of times, it learned that when I type "ch," I'm probably looking to launch Google Chrome because that's the most common selection I've made in the past?even if a file labeled "chicken-recipe" is a closer match, alphabetically speaking.

Notice that with Alfred, you can do everything I just described without taking your hands off the keyboard. If you've ever suffered wrist and thumb strain, or other symptoms of repetitive motion injuries caused by frequent mouse usage, you will immediately "get" Alfred. If not, keep reading, as I'll try to describe some other use cases in this review.

Alfred Looks, Finds, and Executes
Beyond being a quicklaunch and computer search tool, Alfred has other uses that can increase productivity, too.

Alfred enables hotkeys for showing Preferences, switching to Finder or Spotlight to complete the search, and switching to Google to search. System functions work, too: empty trash, log out, put Mac in sleep mode, restart, shut down, turn on the screensaver, and more. Writers will appreciate Alfred's ability to suggest the correct spelling of words or pull up definitions, while others might like the fact that Alfred can work as a calculator, too.

Within the app, you can enable and customize some of these extra functions through the settings, but I found this official Alfred "cheat sheet" even more helpful for learning commands and figuring out what the app can do.

Smoother Searching, Less Stress
Because it's fast, not at all intrusive, free, reduces mouse use, and can increase your productivity, Alfred for Mac easily wins over plenty of users, myself included. If you like the app and can't get enough of it, an optional powerpack (?15GBP, direct) can add even more functionality. Certainly, some users will see Alfred as unnecessary because it replicates a lot of Spotlight's capabilities, while the rest of us enjoy a clean little app that works wonderfully.

(AP) ? Salvage experts can begin pumping fuel from a capsized cruise ship as early as Tuesday to avert a possible environmental catastrophe and the ship is stable enough that search efforts for the missing can continue, Italian officials said.

The decision to carry out both operations in tandem was made after instrument readings determined that the Costa Concordia was not at risk of sliding into deeper waters, Franco Gabrielli, chief of the national civil protection agency, told reporters Monday on the island of Giglio.

"The ship is stable. ... There is no problem or danger that it is about to drop onto much lower seabed," Gabrielli said.

The Concordia rammed a reef Jan. 13 on the tiny Tuscan island and capsized a few hours later just outside Giglio's port as it carried 4,200 passengers and crew on a Mediterranean cruise.

Taking advantage of calm seas, divers on Monday found the bodies of two women near the ship's Internet cafe, raising to 15 the number of confirmed dead.

There are 17 people still unaccounted for, but Gabrielli has said an unregistered Hungarian woman might have been aboard ship. The woman's relatives have told Italian authorities they haven't heard from her since she called them to say she was aboard the ship.

The ship's Italian captain, Francesco Schettino is under house arrest near Naples as prosecutor's investigate him for suspected manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and abandoning his vessel while some passengers and crew were still aboard. He has insisted that he was coordinating rescue operations from a lifeboat and then from shore.

Costa Crociere SpA has distanced itself from the captain, contending that he made an unauthorized deviation from the programmed route. Schettino has reportedly told investigators that Costa officials had requested that he sail close to Giglio in a publicity move.

Schettino's lawyer, Bruno Leporatti, told reporters Monday that tests on urine and hair samples found that his client had not been under the influence of alcohol or drugs before the crash. Prosecutors could not confirm the report, since they cannot speak about the investigation while it is still under way.

Despite earlier fears, officials said the crippled cruise ship, with a 70-meter (230-foot) long gash in its hull, is not expected to roll off its rocky seabed perch and be completely swallowed by the sea.

An Italian geologist, on Giglio to monitor the Concordia, told Sky TG24 Monday the ship was barely moving.

"It is moving at the rate of about one or two millimeters an hour," said Nicola Casagli, adding the ship has moved up to 3mm an hour when tides come in or out. "The ship responds to the tides."

The sea has been calm for several days but he said waves were expected to grow larger in the next few days.

In all, seven bodies await identification, but Gabrielli said officials have DNA from the relatives of all of the missing passengers and are working to confirm names and nationalities. He said the search would continue "as long as it is possible to inspect whatever can be inspected."

Meanwhile, Italian Admiral Ilarione dell'Anna said the fuel removal could begin as early as Tuesday, addressing growing concern among residents and environmentalists that the heavy, tar-like fuel could leak from the ship's 17 double-bottomed tanks.

"They should start the oil drainage operations on the ship. At this point those who died will not come back to life. Even if they pull them out later, unfortunately it won't make a difference," Andrea Ginanneschi, a resident of Giglio, told The Associated Press.

Dell'Anna predicted it would take 28 days to remove all of the fuel, without any interruptions. Officials said the first tank to be emptied will be one above the waterline.

Eight kilometers (five miles) of oil barriers, including absorbent ones, have been laid in the area to protect marine life and the coast in the pristine waters off Giglio, which are prime fishing grounds and a protected area for dolphins and whales.

Recovery experts from the Dutch salvage company Smit have previously said they will create holes in the top and the bottom of each tank, heating the fuel so it flows more easily and pumping from the top while forcing air in from the bottom. For the underwater tanks, sea water will be used to displace the fuel, which becomes thick and gooey when cooled.

Already, some diesel and lubricants have leaked into the water near the ship, probably from machinery on board. Officials have characterized the contamination as superficial.

"Smit has been ready for a week to begin pumping fuel from the tanks, awaiting only the go- ahead," said a company statement. "For this purpose, SMIT has mobilized an oil tanker with emergency response equipment including sweeping arms, booms and a skimmer."

It said the vessel arrived on Monday.

The company also said Italian authorities have indicated it can begin the removal once a second absorbent boom is in place around the ship. The booms are used "to reduce the possibility of polluting shorelines and to help make recovery easier."

Besides 2,200 metric tons of heavier fuel, there also are 185 metric tons of diesel and lubricants on board in addition to chemicals including cleaning products and chlorine.

The top 10 employers of Gen Y workers

A new study by Millennial Branding reveals how and where Generation Y is working today, and may shed light on the future of work.

Data and analytics company Identified.com analyzed the Facebook profiles of 4 million Gen-Y users, aged 18 to 29, in November 2011. Of those reviewed, most (90 percent) lived in the U.S. and listed at least one college (80 percent).

However, just a third (36 percent) listed a job entry on their profiles, possibly because they view their education as a life-long identifier and their job as more temporary. ?Gen-Y workers are job-hoppers,? says Dan Schawbel, founder of Millennial Branding, a Boston-based personal branding agency, and author of "Me 2.0." ?They spend an average of two years at their first jobs, and the average American will have nine jobs between the ages of 18 and 32.?

Slideshow: Most common jobs for Gen Y workers

By 2025, Gen Y is expected to comprise 75 percent of the total workforce, yet currently just 7 percent work for America?s largest companies, according to the study. Interestingly, the biggest recruiter of Gen Y is the U.S. Armed Forces, which employs 3.2 percent in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force. In fact, the breakdown of Gen Y?s top 10 employers looks like this:

  1. Armed Forces
  2. Wal-Mart
  3. Starbucks
  4. Target
  5. Best Buy
  6. McDonald?s
  7. Abercrombie & Fitch
  8. YMCA
  9. CVS Caremark
  10. UPS

A quick glance shows that most are major retailers. Large companies more closely associated with professional positions ? tech firms like IBM and Microsoft and accounting firms like PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young ? are featured much lower on the list. Comparatively, the most common positions held by Gen Yers include server, manager, intern, sales associate, owner, cashier, teacher, supervisor, assistant and sales representative.

Jobs expert and executive recruiter Skip Freeman says the incredible unemployment rates experienced by 16- to 24-year-olds ?means that the jobs they will be able to get are the ones that don?t require education or experience.? Furthermore, he says companies are now looking for candidates with ?current, relevant experience? that don?t require an investment in training and development. In a competitive market that demands specific skills, that?s bad news for the youth population. ?Only as the job market improves will we see the opportunities for the Gen-Y folks get better.?

At the same time, Gen Yers who can?t find stable employment or no longer trust traditional work structures are starting their own businesses. ?Owner? was the fifth most popular job title among Millennials. ?I think we?re looking at the end of the 9 to 5,? says Schawbel. ?Gen Yers would rather work for smaller companies, and they want flexibility and to do work that has an impact.? It may also help explain the high incidence of retail employers, he adds, as Gen-Y workers would be more likely to take part-time jobs as they juggle school or small businesses.

Corporations would be wise to take notice of the trend. ?There is a disconnect between Gen Y and their employers,? Schawbel says. Current management views Millennials? job-hopping as disloyal, while Millennials crave a more entrepreneurial work style enabled by new technologies, he notes. To avoid a potential clash, he advises employers to offer their Gen-Y workers more freedom over their time, activities and budgets.

For their part, the young workers may want to think twice about their Facebook identities. According to the study, Gen Yers have an average of 16 coworkers as Facebook friends but are using the social network primarily for personal rather than professional reasons. Schawbel warns that an unfiltered Facebook feed could come back to haunt them in the workplace, possibly leading to termination.

Rex Ryan says he might tone down his act

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr.

updated 6:48 p.m. ET Jan. 20, 2012

NEW YORK - The days of big, brash talk by Rex Ryan could be over.

The New York Jets coach told WFAN Radio on Friday that he'll remain confident but might tone down his comments after his Super Bowl guarantees and bravado might have hurt his team this season. Ryan, who has promised big things for the Jets since taking over as coach in 2009, predicted a Super Bowl victory this season during the NFL combine last February.

"My thing about, 'I'll guarantee that we get it done this year,' I thought the bull's-eye was going on my back, and that's fine," Ryan said. "I was trying to put pressure on myself. So that's something that obviously I have to learn from."

The Jets lost their last three games to finish 8-8 and out of the playoffs. Ryan said he drove by MetLife Stadium during the Giants' playoff-opening win against Atlanta two weeks ago to see it "in all blue" to motivate himself to get the Jets back on track.

"Clearly, when you have a team that went to back-to-back championship games, what else is there to go for?" Ryan said. "It's Super Bowl or bust. Well, we busted."

Recent comments by LaDainian Tomlinson about Ryan's bravado and a conversation with former 49ers quarterback Steve Young, now an ESPN analyst, about his style got the coach thinking about tweaking his approach.

"I've got to look at the entire dynamic of what I say," Ryan said, "and how it doesn't just affect me."

Despite being done playing for nearly three weeks, the Jets have still made news ? with players taking swipes at quarterback Mark Sanchez and revealing a troublesome locker room environment. On Showtime's "Inside The NFL" on Wednesday night, Tomlinson said the Jets' locker room was "as bad as I've ever been around."

As owner Woody Johnson did on Thursday, Ryan disputed that by saying he thought the running back might have overstated the amount of tension. Most notably, Sanchez and wide receiver Santonio Holmes had a rocky relationship throughout the season.

"I think it was an isolated incident," Ryan said. "I don't think it was pervasive throughout the locker room. It's not everybody in the locker room. We certainly had a couple of guys, and it had a huge negative impact on our football team, so there's no question about that."

Ryan acknowledged a few times after the season that he never had his finger fully on the pulse of the team, something he insists will change.

"I want to be a great head coach," he said. "I want to be. Am I there yet? No, I'm absolutely not there yet, but I am willing to work to get there."

In a conference call with season ticket holders earlier Friday, Ryan said the confusing terminology of former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer's system caused him to not be as involved in working with the offense.

"Quite honestly, the verbiage we had last season was probably a little much," Ryan said.

Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum both insisted Sanchez will be the Jets' starting quarterback next season and will benefit from new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano's run-first system.

Ryan isn't totally done making guarantees, though. During his interview with WFAN, the coach predicted the Giants and Baltimore Ravens would make it to the Super Bowl.

"I think the Giants are going to take this game," he said. "Eli (Manning) is hot. I like the fact that both of their running backs are healthy. I think you could be looking at a Ravens-Giants rematch."

He also raved about the Ravens' defense ? a unit he once coached ? and how it could neutralize Tom Brady.

"But the Ravens' offense has to show up," he said. "They've got to protect the football. I think they can move on the ball, no question. Let's face it, I'm cheering for the Ravens."

Cowardice at sea is no crime -- at least in the U.S. (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? When Captain Francesco Schettino hopped a life boat after the Costa Concordia hit a rock off the Tuscany coast, he violated a sacred maritime tradition: that a captain should be the last to leave his ship.

He also is accused of violating the law. Italian maritime code criminalizes the act of abandoning ship and Schettino was placed under house arrest, accused of causing the disaster and then jumping ship before the evacuation was complete.

Countries have adopted different maritime codes over the centuries and the responsibilities of a captain can be traced to a 12th century French document called the Rolls of Oleron, which established the first known outlines of maritime law.

The sailor's code that's developed from the rolls - or rules - has been celebrated in everything from Conrad's Lord Jim, about a young seaman who abandons a ship in distress, to the 1960s U.S. television show Gilligan's Island theme song, with the lyric, "If not for the courage of the fearless crew, The Minnow would be lost!"

In the United States, the rule that a captain should be the last to leave a distressed ship is not a criminal offense. The Westlaw online legal research service shows the phrase "abandon ship" turned up 618 decisions but none addressed a captain's decision to leave a ship before his passengers.

The closest U.S. law that appears to take on the act of leaving a ship before passengers and crew is seaman's manslaughter, which criminalizes a captain's misconduct or negligence that result in deaths. A version of the statute was used to convict a seaman in the 19th century who abandoned 31 passengers aboard a sinking ship on its way to Philadelphia from Liverpool.

But the seaman' manslaughter has rarely been invoked in recent years -- cited in just 22 court decisions since 1976, none of which involved accusations against a captain leaving a ship prematurely, according to Westlaw.

The issue of abandoning ship has been discussed widely since the Costa Concordia's crash last week. According to the Italian Coast Guard, Schettino not only jumped into a lifeboat before there had been an accounting of the more than 4,000 passengers and crew, he also refused a coast guard's plea to return.

Schettino, who was arrested a day after the boat capsized, has denied accusations that he acted cowardly. He says he fell into the lifeboat while helping other passengers, according to a report in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

THE SAILOR'S HONOR CODE

In Italy, a commander who leaves before his passengers can be sent to jail for up to two years. If he jumps ship and people die, he can be sentenced to eight years in jail.

"It's based on the sailor's honor code," said Luca C.M. Melchionna, a professor at St. John's University School of Law in New York.

The concept that a ship's master has specific duties was popularized in Britain by Eleanor of Acquitaine around 1160, after she had become the Queen of England. Based on the Rolls of Oleron, the rules mostly addressed commercial concerns like the condition of cargo.

Over time, different countries adopted aspects of the Rolls for their admiralty law. After the sinking of Titanic in 1912, several nations signed the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, which addressed safety requirements for ships such as the number of lifeboats needed. The treaty requires that the master of a ship at sea "proceed with all speed" to help any person in distress, if possible. It doesn't mention when it's acceptable for a captain to leave a ship in danger.

"There is no basis in international law for the notion that the captain goes down with the ship, or that he is the last to leave the ship," said Vice Admiral Sir Alan Massey, chief executive of the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency and a former senior officer in the Royal Navy.

It has been up to individual countries to enact their own criminal maritime laws. In the U.S., for example, the seaman's manslaughter statute was passed in the mid-19th century after several fatal steamboat accidents.

There's no shortage of inspiring tales of seamen following the honor code. William Lewis Herndon, commander of the commercial mail steamer Central America in the 19th century, got women and children safely off the sinking ship, and stayed behind and drowned with more than 400 passengers and crew who couldn't escape. Though historical accounts differ on the death of Edward John Smith, the captain of the Titanic, in the 1997 movie he's shown stoically gripping the ship's wheel before water gushes into the bridge and kills him.

Of course, not every seafaring figure with a story was a hero. A yarn that has haunted mariners for years comes from Conrad's Lord Jim, who fantasized about being a hero if an emergency ever arose at sea, said Craig Allen, Sr., a visiting professor of maritime studies at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

"When the emergency really did arise he proved to be a coward instead," he said.

Hastings: Obama fudging energy figures

Listen

WASHINGTON, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- A House Republican leader accused the White House of employing fuzzy math when trumpeting the president's domestic energy agenda.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said U.S. President Barack Obama is committed to a broad-based policy regarding domestic energy production.

"The fact of the matter is, on oil and gas production, we have higher oil production in this country in 2010 than we've had since 2003," he said.

U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings, R-Wash., chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources, accused the Obama administration of fudging the numbers regarding domestic energy.

He said Carney was using numbers based on leases awarded on private land, adding oil and natural gas production on federal lands was down more than 40 percent compared to the early part of the century.

"Under the Obama administration, 2010 had the lowest number of onshore leases issued since 1984," Hastings' committee said in a statement.

Hastings said that, last year, the Obama administration conducted only one lease sale by December, narrowly avoiding making 2011 the first year since 1953 the government didn't have such a sale.

The U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management announced more than 20 companies in the December sale submitted 241 bids worth a combined more than $700 million for the rights to explore about 1 million acres in the western Gulf of Mexico.

It was the first federal lease sale since a moratorium on offshore drilling was enacted following the April 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

UK unemployment rate hits 17-year high of 8.4 pct

(AP) ? Britain's unemployment rate spiked to 8.4 percent in November, its highest level since 1995, official figures showed Wednesday.

The figure is up from last month's 8.3 percent and follows a run of fairly downbeat economic news.

The Office for National Statistics also said there were 2.7 million people out of work in the three months from September to November. That is the highest figure since 1994.

Unemployment is rising as the British economy has flatlined in the wake of the debt crisis in the euro area, which has dented economic confidence, and as the government continues with its deficit-reduction program.

The statistics office also found that pay growth remains relatively muted as high unemployment keeps a lid on wages.

Analysts expect unemployment to continue to rise

"Public sector staff cuts will be accompanied by private sector job losses, as companies focus on cost-cutting in the face of what many are expecting to be a challenging year ahead," said Chris Williamson, chief economist at financial data company Markit.

The report came a day after some rare good news, a sharp drop in the U.K.'s consumer prices inflation rate from 4.8 percent to 4.2 percent. But that too was a measure of a tough year ahead; retailers contributed to the improved inflation rate by slashing prices in December to lure customers.
