You tell us: Who should Benson Henderson fight next?
Not long after Benson Henderson had the UFC lightweight belt fastened around his waist, questions arose on who he would fight next. UFC commentator Joe Rogan said at the end of the UFC 144 broadcast it would be Anthony Pettis. Frankie Edgar, who just lost his belt in a close fight, said he should get it. Nate Diaz and Jim Miller are fighting in May and the winner of that bout has a stake on the title shot. Who would you give it to?
Anthony Pettis: He is one of just two men to have beaten Henderson. Their WEC 53 bout, the last bout the WEC ever produced, was close until Pettis pulled out "the Showtime kick." There's no doubt they would produce another exciting bout.
On the other hand, does a split decision over Jeremy Stephens and a knockout of Joe Lauzon qualify you for a title shot? That's all Pettis has done since losing to Clay Guida, who lost to Henderson.
Frankie Edgar: Not only was his loss to Henderson a close decision even refuted by UFC president Dana White, but Edgar had to give immediate rematches twice while champ. Why shouldn't Henderson do the same?
On the other hand, it would tie up the belt with the same two fighters vying for it. Again. Ben Fowlkes from MMA Fighting pointed out that while not granting an immediate rematch to Edgar would be unfair to him, it would be extra fair to everyone else. Do you want to see Edgar in another rematch, or do you want to see someone else get a shot?
Winner of Nate Diaz vs. Jim Miller: On May 5, the two will square off on the UFC's next Fox card. With both fighters floating near the top of the lightweight division, this bout has title eliminator written all over it.
On the other hand, Miller lost to Henderson in August. For Diaz, a win would give him his third straight, but his resume isn't more impressive than the other top lightweights.
Time for you to play matchmaker. Who would you give the next lightweight title shot to? Tell us in the comments, on Twitter or on Facebook.

Cancer-stricken teacher assistant fired for missing work | The Raw ...

?
A North Carolina woman has been fired from her job as teacher assistant because her former employer says cancer treatments caused her to miss too many days of work.
Donna Sotomayor took leave from River Bend Elementary School in Raleigh to receive six chemotherapy treatments and 33 radiation treatments after being diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in January 2010.
Even after returning to work in October of 2010 Sotomayor continued to miss work due to infection and other problems.
Then in November of last year, doctors informed her that the cancer had spread to her spine.
?I have a family,? Sotomayor told WRAL. ?I have a lot to live for. And when my doctor tells me, ?You have to go out and go through treatment immediately,? then yeah, I?m going to do that.?
Although she had years of glowing work evaluations, Principal Lois Hart recommended that she be fired. She had been employed by River Bend Elementary School since 2004.
?She was always friendly and supportive, and I don?t know what changed,? Sotomayor recalled. ?They said they need someone there who was reliable. Apparently, I wasn?t reliable. I was sick.?
Human resources informed her that she lacked about 50 hours of work to qualify for Family Medical Leave, giving her the option to resign or be fired.
?Talk about getting kicked when you?re down, and it really shocked me because I did not see it coming at all,? she explained.
Wake County Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Stephen Gainey told WRAL that he wished the case ?never came across my desk.?
?The problem becomes, if you start holding jobs indefinitely, you wind up with, you?d be amazed how long, how quickly you?d get holes all over your school system,? Gainey insisted. ?It is a tough thing to manage.?
As a final blow, the school system claimed she had been overpaid and deducted $1,400 from her short-term disability account.
?It?s hard enough, you?re going through cancer treatment trying to fight for your life,? Sotomayor said.
The former assistant teacher is now considering suing the Wake County Public School System for violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Gunman kills two US Army officers in Afghan Interior Ministry
NBC's Atia Abawi reports.
By NBC News' Jim Miklaszewski and news services
Updated at?5:36 p.m. ET: A gunman shot dead two American military officials inside the heavily guarded Afghan Interior Ministry in the center of the capital Kabul on Saturday in an alarmingly brazen attack, as protests raged across the country for a fifth day over the burning of the Muslim holy book at a NATO base.
The Americans, who were U.S.?Army officers serving as advisers to the Afghan security forces, were sitting at their desks inside the government ministry building when they were killed, NBC News reported. They were shot in the back of the head, Western officials speaking on condition of anonymity told The Associated Press.
U.S. officials said the assailant ? who has not been identified by name or nationality ? remained at large and a manhunt was under way.
Underscoring the gravity of the attack and apparent security breach, Gen. John Allen, the commander of NATO and U.S. forces in Afghanistan,?ordered all NATO personnel recalled from Afghan ministries "for obvious force protection reasons."
Retired Army Gen. Barry McCaffrey offers analysis of the deaths and protests in Afghanistan.
"We are investigating the crime and will pursue all leads to find the person responsible for this attack. The perpetrator of this attack is a coward whose actions will not go unanswered," Allen said in a statement.
The U.S. servicemen ? a lieutenant colonel and a major ? were found dead on the floor of an office that only people who know a numerical combination can get into, Afghan and Western officials told the AP.
"There is CCTV there and special locks. The killer would have had to have the highest security (clearance) to get to the room where they were killed,"?an Afghan security source told Reuters.
NATO spokesman Lt. Col Jimmie Cummings said "initial reports say it was not a Western shooter." He declined to provide further information.
In an e-mail sent to Western officials in Kabul from NATO headquarters, the?attack was described as ?green on blue,? which is the military term used here when Afghan security forces turn their weapons on their Western military allies, The New York Times reported.
The Afghan Taliban claimed that two of their fighters had managed to enter the building in Kabul and kill four "high-ranking U.S. advisers," according to NBC News. U.S. military officials confirmed only two deaths and the Taliban claim could not be independently verified. The Taliban often exaggerate claims of responsibility for terror attacks.
Musadeq Sadeq / AP
A U.S. military convoy enters the Afghan Interior Ministry in Kabul on Saturday after a gunman killed two American advisers inside.
"Our suicide bomber Abdur Rahman along with another fighter managed to enter the interior ministry and open fire at the Americans. Before carrying out the suicide attack, Abdur Rahman told us on telephone that he had killed four high-ranking Americans. The second fighter successfully escaped the building and has joined his fighters now," the Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said in a phone call to NBC?from an undisclosed location.
Military leaders and politicians haven't had much success in stopping the violence, but religious leaders have. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.
He said it was revenge?for the?desecration of holy Quran by the U.S. forces.
In Washington,?Pentagon press secretary George Little?said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta was informed of the shooting Saturday morning. "This act is unacceptable, and the United States condemns it in the strongest possible terms," Little said.
He said?Afghan Defense Minister?Gen. Abdul Rahim Wardak called Panetta to apologize and to offer his condolences.
"Secretary Panetta appreciated the call and urged the Afghan government to take decisive action to protect coalition forces and curtail the violence in Afghanistan after a challenging week in the country," Little's statement said. "Minister Wardak said that President (Hamid) Karzai was assembling the religious leaders, parliamentarians, justices of the Supreme Court and other senior Afghan officials to take urgent steps to do so."
In Kabul, Allen met with Afghan Interior Minister?Bismillah Mohammadi, who pledged "complete cooperation in investigating today's tragedy and in taking stronger measures to protect ISAF personnel," Little said.
President Barack Obama called Allen after Saturday's shootings and the White House said the president supported the steps taken to protect U.S. service members in Afghanistan.
"We welcome President Karzai's statement ... encouraging peaceful expressions, and his call for dialogue and calm. The United States remains committed to a partnership with the government and people of Afghanistan, as we work to realize our shared goal of disrupting, dismantling and defeating al-Qaida and strengthening the Afghan state," the White House statement added.
If the shootings are linked to Afghan forces, new questions will arise about Taliban infiltration as well as their ability to secure Afghanistan once NATO combat forces withdraw in 2014.
NATO is supposed to be moving away from a combat role to an advise-and-assist mission as early as next year. That will require NATO to place more staff in ministries.
"The fact that NATO is recalling staff from ministries suggests they are worried about a deep malaise in the Afghan security forces, that they expect more of these attacks," said Kamran Bokhari at STRATFOR global intelligence firm.
Quran protests
Saturday's attack comes as tensions between the Afghans and the Americans are high following the burning of copies of the Muslim holy book at a U.S. base that sparked days of deadly protests.
At least 28 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since Tuesday, when it first emerged that Qurans and other religious materials had been thrown into a fire pit used to burn garbage at Bagram Air Field, a large U.S. base north of Kabul. Among those dead were two U.S. soldiers who were killed Thursday by one of their Afghan counterparts while a riot raged outside their base in the eastern province of Nangarhar.
President Barack Obama and other U.S. officials apologized and said the burning of Qurans was a terrible mistake, but the incident has sent thousands to the streets in this deeply religious country.
In Kunduz, the capital of Kunduz province in northeast Afghanistan, more than 1,000 protesters demonstrated. At first they were peaceful, but as the protest continued they began throwing stones at government buildings and a U.N. office, said Sarwer Hussaini, a spokesman for the provincial police. He said the police were firing into the air to try to disperse the crowd.
The U.N. confirmed in a statement that its Kunduz compound was attacked, but said all its staff in Kunduz and in the country were unhurt and accounted for. The statement thanked Afghan security forces for their quick response to the assault.

Contraceptives Birth Control
?
You can prevent pregnancy in different ways and one of them is use of birth control pills. Most doctors, after proper clinical tests, Today women have a choice when selecting birth control. Many opt for the daily pill which has been around for decades.
?
No, you?re not. The friction of the two condoms rubbing against one another actually increases the chances of the condoms breaking, making it more dangerous rather than less.There are a number of oral contraceptives that can put you at substantially greater risk of developing side effects that could adversely affect your health.
?
Generally, all birth control pills, injections and methods are effective. That?s the reason why these are out in the market in the first place.There are many choices when it comes to contraception and birth control, possibly more than you are even aware of.
Birth control and pregnancy prevention is not a new idea.
?
As the old maxim goes, all men are not created equal: in all aspects of life especially with regards to penis sizes (and shapes).There are many types of contraceptives for women today. They are found in the forms of pills, injections, diaphragms, IUDs, and more.
?
A lot of young couples opt to wait a few years before beginning a family to enable them to provide a comfortable home and also have some savings and maybe a few labour-saving gadgets,This is a set of pills usually only available on prescription. The combined pill must be taken one each day for 21 days, starting on the fifth day after menstruation begins and ending on the 25th day.
?
Under age sex is becoming a great problem now days. Many teenagers try to have sex, because they want to spice up their relationship. There are a lot of us who are not ready to have kids but still have sex. This is where birth control pills and devices comes in.
?
Gone are the days when people relied on condoms, diaphragms, and spermicide to protect them from unwanted pregnancy. When the best time to get pregnant becomes a big question for you as a wife you should consider a few things first regarding Birth Control and Pregnancy.
?
If you think that you have nothing to worry about because you exercise and diet?think again. Yes?diet and exercise can help you mitigate some of the weight gain?but if you continue doing what you?ve been doing, you?ll still gain 15-25 pounds during this period.

BARC Slammed By Animal Intake, Slashing Prices To Re-Home Pets
(credit: Matt Cardy/Getty Images)
BARC, the City of Houston?s animal shelter, is fighting a capacity crisis. BARC is required by law to accept every animal brought to its doors by Houston residents, and also has the mandate to provide animal control services within Houston city limits. Animal activity such as roaming to breed tends to decrease during colder weather; unfortunately, the unseasonably warm temperatures this ?winter? has brought many more animals than normal across BARC?s doorstep. BARC took in 250 animals from Tuesday, February 21st to Thursday, February 23rd. The BARC facility has 550 animal enclosures for both dogs and cats. As of Friday morning, February 24th, there were 476 dogs alone at the shelter, in addition to 121 cats. In response to the intake spike, BARC is slashing its adoption fee to $10 for cats and $20 for dogs into next week, hoping that Houstonians will relieve the strain.
?People are more apt to dump unwanted pets outside when it`s warm if they can`t take care of it or don`t want it anymore because they think the animal will be able to talk care of itself,? said Carlene Lormand, Marketing & Outreach Manager for BARC. Adding, ?Houston winters normally allow us to regroup and prepare for kitten season in the spring, and ?everything? season after that. This winter has been great to get outdoors with your family, but it is stressing our capacity. We just flat out need help right now. We have great pets here, you already get the most bang for your ?new pet? buck at BARC, but we have to do what we can to get people here to move more animals out the door and into homes.?
High intakes have exhausted BARC?s capability to provide additional space. Litter upon litter of puppies and multitudes of stray dogs are flooding the BARC facility while many area rescue groups are already full. BARC has also seen a higher number of lost pets or animals arriving at the facility that may have owners looking for them. Remember to check BARC if your pet is lost, no matter where you are located in the City. To check online, visit www.petharbor.com to search for your lost pet ? BARC information is updated on this site every hour.
All animals offered for adoption are spayed/neutered and have received age-appropriate vaccinations, a City license tag and microchip. For the weekend, BARC has partnered with several Petsmart and Petco locations around the city to offer adoptions of fully vetted BARC animals, including Saturday at Petsmart at 290 and Hollister (11a ? 6p), Petco on Eldridge at 1960 (Noon ? 6p), Petco on Highway 6 in Copperfield (11a ? 6p), and Petco on Wilcrest and Westheimer (Noon ? 5p). On Sunday the Petco Wilcrest and Westheimer location will be offering adoptable pets from 1p ? 6p.
?
BARC knows Houston can respond during this unusual influx. Remember, year-round BARC offers a free ?Seniors for Seniors? placement program for pets over 3 years old for Seniors 55 and older. To get in the spirit of the Academy Awards, BARC is filming a promotional video Saturday they plan to air in the coming weeks ahead. Visit BARC on Saturday, and you just might see yourself on camera!
And, as always, the BARC facility will host Friends of BARC?s Wags to Whiskers adoption event at 3200 Carr on Saturday 12-4 pm with free hot dogs and hamburgers. The tireless Friends of BARC volunteers welcome all potential adopters, fosters and volunteers with their energy and clear dedication to BARC animals.
The simplest, but most powerful thing you can do to help the BARC Houston shelter, and pets throughout our community, is to talk to your friends, neighbors, and family about caring for pets responsibly. To donate to BARC online via the Houston BARC Foundation, click here.

What the Hell is a 'Social Business' and Why Should You Care ...
If you?ve been following the social media marketing space/blogosphere over the last year or so, you?ve probably heard increasing chatter about the concept of ?Social Business?.
So what IS a Social Business? ?Good question, and it seems one that not even the people chattering about it can agree upon. ?For example, The Wikipedia definition states ?social business?is a non-loss, non-dividend company designed to address a social objective within the highly regulated marketplace of today. It is distinct from a non-profit because the business should seek to generate a modest profit but this will be used to expand the company?s reach, improve the product or service or in other ways to subsidise the social mission.?
Ok?but here?s how @Armano describes it ?At it?s core, it?s about connecting stakeholders who are critical to the success of your business. And as I?ve stressed before?it?s about executing initiatives leveraging the ?3 P?s??People, Process & Platforms.? ?David also has a nifty drawing that helps explain the process at that link.
And here?s Augie Ray?s definition: ?A new form of commerce where consumers, empowered by new social technologies and behaviors, bypass traditional channels and acquire more information, goods and services directly from each other.?
Finally, here?s how the Social Business Forum defines a Social Business: ?An organization that has put in place the strategies, technologies and processes to systematically engage all the individuals of its ecosystem (employees, customers, partners, suppliers) to maximize the co-created value?
?
Three things I see from the above and other various definitions I?ve found for the term ?Social Business?:
1 ? We can?t even agree on the definition of the concept. ?Which is no biggie, most of us can?t agree on the definition of ?Social Media? and it?s been around for 25 years in some form or another.
2 ? The name ?Social Business? is terrible in that it immediately makes you think ?Oh I get it, a business that does social media!? ?Seriously, we marketers and business types put the ?social? modifier on waaaaay too many things.
3 ? These definitions (and much of the discussion around the concept) seem to be focused on the companies that ?get it? when it comes to?whatever your definition of a ?social business? is. ?If you?re a business that doesn?t ?get it?, is talking about how becoming a social business will help you ?engage with and empower your customers to increase co-created value? REALLY going to get you excited? ?I mean companies have been hearing about the potential of empowering and embracing their customers for at least 5 years now when we all got on a kick about how amazing social media is. ?Right? ?If that talk didn?t blow their skirts up, changing the name from ?social media? to ?social business? and trying again probably won?t either.
?
BTW here?s another interesting tidbit, the Wikipedia definition of the term ?Enterprise 2.0?:?Enterprise 2.0?is the use of ?Web 2.0? technologies within an?organization?to enable or streamline?business processes?while enhancing collaboration ? connecting people through the use of?social-media?tools. Enterprise 2.0 aims to help employees, customers and suppliers collaborate, share, and organize information.?Andrew McAfee?describes Enterprise 2.0 as ?the use of emergent social software platforms within companies, or between companies and their partners or customers?.
Ah we marketers do love to mark our territory by slapping labels on everything, don?t we?
But perhaps the biggest problem I have with most of the discussion around the concept of a ?Social Business? is that it seemed to be geared toward selling companies on the concept, versus the actual business benefits of integrating/embracing the concept.
Last month when I spoke at Bazaarvoice, I got to spend some time talking to CMO Erin Nelson and I learned more about BV?s offerings and how the companies is helping its clients. ?In general, Bazaarvoice is creating products and systems that let clients get more detailed and relevant (read: valuable) product information and feedback, and then helping them ACT on that feedback, both internally and externally, in order to improve existing business processes.
A very simple example: ?Erin noted that LL Bean tracked the reviews customers were leaving on their site for a popular sweater, and they noted that customers were asking for it to be produced in the colors green and purple. ?So LL Bean started offering the sweater in those colors as well, and sales doubled as a result. ?And the great thing about getting and ACTING on customer feedback is that it only encourages your customers to leave MORE feedback, which increases the chance that you can continue to improve existing business functions as a result.
That one small example to me does more to explain the possible reason why a company would want to become more connected ?internally and externally because it details a real-world business benefit from doing so.
As a result, I think those of us that are talking about the concept of a ?Social Business? need to stop talking about it as if we are selling a concept/product, and start talking about it as if we are selling the BENEFITS of being a Social Business. ?Because that?s what you SHOULD be doing, and besides, that?s a far more interesting conversation to be having anyway.

Brain makes call on which ear is used for cell phone
ScienceDaily (Feb. 21, 2012) ? If you're a left brain thinker, chances are you use your right hand to hold your cell phone up to your right ear, according to a new study from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.
The study finds a strong correlation between brain dominance and the ear used to listen to a cell phone, with more than 70 percent of participants holding their cell phone up to the ear on the same side as their dominant hand.
Left brain dominate people -- those whose speech and language center is on the left side of the brain -- are more likely to use their right hand for writing and other everyday tasks.
Likewise, the Henry Ford study shows most left brain dominant people also use the phone in their right ear, despite there being no perceived difference in their hearing in the left or right ear. And, right brain dominant people are more likely to use their left hand to hold the phone in their left ear.
"Our findings have several implications, especially for mapping the language center of the brain," says Michael Seidman, M.D., FACS, director of the division of otologic and neurotologic surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology -- Head and Neck Surgery at Henry Ford.
"By establishing a correlation between cerebral dominance and sidedness of cell phone use, it may be possible to develop a less-invasive, lower-cost option to establish the side of the brain where speech and language occurs rather than the Wada test, a procedure that injects an anesthetic into the carotid artery to put half of the brain to sleep in order to map activity."
Dr. Seidman notes that the study also may offer additional evidence that cell phone use and brain, and head and neck tumors may not be linked.
If there was a strong connection, he says there would be a far more people diagnosed with cancer on the right side of their brain, head and neck -- the dominate side for cell phone use. But it's likely that there is a time and "dose-dependence" to the development of tumors, he notes.
Study results will be presented Feb. 26 in San Diego at the 25th Mid-Winter Meeting of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology.
The study began with the simple observation that most people use their right hand to hold a cell phone to their right ear. This practice, Dr. Seidman says, is illogical since it is challenging to listen on the phone with the right ear and take notes with the right hand.
To determine if there is an association between sidedness of cell phone use and auditory or language hemispheric dominance, the Henry Ford team developed a online survey using modifications of the Edinburgh Handedness protocol, a tool used for more than 40 years to assess handedness and predict cerebral dominance.
The Henry Ford survey included questions about which hand was used for tasks such as writing; time spent talking on cell phone; whether the right or left ear is used to listen to phone conversations; and if respondents had been diagnosed with a brain or head and neck tumor.
It was distributed to 5,000 individuals who were either with an otology online group or a patient undergoing Wada and MRI for non-invasive localization purposes. More than 700 responded to the online survey.
On average, respondents' cell phone usage was 540 minutes per month.
The majority of respondents (90 percent) were right handed, 9 percent were left handed and 1 percent was ambidextrous.
Among those who are right handed, 68 percent reported that they hold the phone to their right ear, while 25 percent used the left ear and 7 percent used both right and left ears. For those who are left handed, 72 percent said they used their left ear for cell phone conversations, while 23 percent used their right ear and 5 percent had no preference.
The study also revealed that having a hearing difference can impact ear preference for cell phone use.
In all, the study found that there is a correlation between brain dominance and laterality of cell phone use, and there is a significantly higher probability of using the dominant hand side ear.

Should California community colleges prioritize enrollment to help ...
By the end of this week, the Student Success Act of 2012 should be officially introduced in the Legislature, launching the debate on how to improve success rates at California?s community colleges.? The Act is necessary to implement some of the 22 recommendations of the Student Success Task Force, which spent the last year developing the proposals and soliciting feedback at dozens of public hearings across the state.
California?s community colleges enroll about 2.6 million students at 112 campuses and have a broad mission. ?But the completion rates for students seeking associate degrees, certificates and transfer credits is disappointing. ?Less than 54 percent of degree-seeking students ever reach their goals, and the rates are much lower for African-American and Latino students, and the vast majority of students who have to complete basic skills courses.
Although the Community College Board of Governors approved the task force recommendations, some of proposals remain divisive, particularly the plans that give priority enrollment to students who move more quickly through community college and, conversely, push the other students to the end of the line.
We have four commentaries on this issue from people who have been closely involved in the process over the last year.? Community College Board of Governors member Peter MacDougall served as chair of the Student Success Task Force. ?Michelle Pilati gave testimony at many of the hearings as President of the California Community Colleges Academic Senate, as did Michele Siqueiros, Executive Director of the Campaign for College Opportunity, and Emily Kinner, the President of the California Community College Association of Student Trustees. We welcome your thoughts on the issue.
Peter MacDougall: New enrollment priorities necessary and fair
The question that is posed is one that the Student Success Task Force studied in great detail as it developed recommendations designed to help California community college students succeed and achieve their educational goals on time.
It used to be that community colleges could serve almost anyone who wanted to enroll in a wide offering of courses ? whether the goal was to get a degree or certificate, transfer to a four-year institution, or take enrichment courses. However, severe budget cuts have substantially reduced the number of courses colleges can offer. Yet enrollment policies remain in place throughout much of the system that allow hobbyists and students who have accumulated large numbers of units to register ahead of first-time students seeking certificates, associate degrees in career and technical fields, and transfer preparation.
This is not acceptable; hundreds of thousands of first-time students, recent graduates of California?s high schools, have been turned away because they could not register for a single course.
The task force, recognizing that financial constraints have forced colleges to limit their educational offerings, concluded that a new set of priorities is needed to guide enrollment. The proposed policies will give priority to students seeking courses that address the core mission of our colleges: career technical education, completing lower division transfer requirements, and basic skills and English as a second language. These students will also be expected to take a diagnostic assessment, participate in orientation, and develop an education plan.
All students will need to identify a program of study within three semesters or they will lose their registration priority. In addition, students who accumulate more than 100 units, not including English as a second language and basic skills courses, would lose their enrollment priority.
Research shows that students who develop an education plan and identify a course of study early in their academic careers are more likely to succeed. Students, of course,?will be able to change their course of study should their interests and goals change.
Given the substantial increase in the expense of pursuing both a four-year degree and career and technical training programs, it is imperative that California ensure low-cost access to the high-quality educational opportunities provided by our community colleges.
Altering enrollment prioritization is an efficient way of encouraging successful student behaviors and ensuring that we intelligently ration classes. While these policy proposals may have been born at a time of financial crisis in our colleges, they are fair and sensible reforms that should be made regardless of budget considerations.
Peter MacDougall, Ph.D., is chair of the California Community Colleges Student Success Task Force and is a member of the California Community Colleges Board of Governors.?He served as superintendent and president of the Santa Barbara Community College District from 1981 to 2002. Prior to that, Dr. MacDougall served as dean of students at Los Angeles Pierce College and director of educational services for the Los Angeles Community College District. From 1968 to 1975, he was associate dean of students and a professor of counseling psychology in the graduate school of education at Rutgers State University of New Jersey.
Michelle L. Pilati: Deciding who?s worthy conflicts with mission
Prioritization is not a simple ?do we do it or not? option; it is a multidimensional tool that can be used in effective and ineffective ways. The notion of using prioritization as a means to ?enable students to graduate earlier? is simplistic at its best and fundamentally flawed at its worst. In addition to the implication that ?graduation? (i.e., degree completion) is our only mission, the factors that lead students to take ?too long? are complex and, often, institutional. Unit accumulation need not reflect a student ?wandering? or engaging in avocational pursuits. Students may accumulate ?excess? units as they strive to identify their goals, enroll in classes that do not apply towards their goal due to an inability to get into needed classes, or find a particular faculty member is so engaging that they want to learn more from him or her.
Putting aside the idea that proper prioritization will force students to establish a goal and stick with it (college grads out there ? how many times did you change your major?), could we use prioritization as a means of helping students to attain their goals? Of course we could, but how do we go about this in an equitable way? Who is more ?worthy?: a veteran, a new student, a student with two classes left to complete a transfer degree, a student with four classes left to complete a certificate in automotive technology, or a new immigrant who wishes to learn English? While the focus of conversation about this topic has often been about who should not have priority, no one has considered the universe of students who have worthy educational needs but have goals that may not be consistent with the quantitative definitions of success that we are compelled to work with.
Ideally, students would have priority access to the courses that are consistent with their goals; the student who needs a given class in order to graduate would trump the one who is taking it for pleasure, and the English-language learner would have priority for those classes to help her attain her goal. The conversation about prioritization has yet to really begin.
Michelle L. Pilati, Ph.D., is the president of the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) and a professor of psychology at Rio Hondo College, where she has been full-time faculty since 1999, and served as Distance Education Coordinator and Curriculum Chair. At the national level she has pursued her interest in online education, serving as an editor for MERLOT (Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) and ?co-editor of the MERLOT peer-reviewed journal, JOLT. Prior to her current position, she served as a visiting professor at UC Irvine, conducted postdoctoral research at UCLA?s Drug Abuse Research Center, and worked as an academic counselor in UCLA?s Department of Psychology. She completed her doctorate in psychology at UCLA.
Michele Siqueiros: Prioritizing fulfills promise of college opportunity
Students are taking longer and longer to graduate from community college, and that?s due to several factors, including devastating budget cuts that forced the system to eliminate thousands of courses and turn away an estimated 200,000 students last fall. For those who do get in, researchers in our 2010 Divided We Fail report found that after six years, only three in ten degree-seeking students obtained a vocational certificate, earned an associate degree, or transferred to a four-year university.
We must continue to demand adequate funding for higher education, but we can also be smarter with the resources available. Prioritizing course offerings is one way to do that. There are daily stories about community college students unable to get the classes they need for their major or program. In a year when more than 20,000 course sections were cut ? including basic skills, transfer-level English and math, career pathway courses, and ESL ? the following were still available:?Playing the Ukulele for Older Adults; Ceramics: An Option for Friday Night; Latin for Lifelong Learners; Reminiscing; Reclaiming Joy: Meeting Your Inner Child; and Finding Buried Treasure: Organizing Your Clutter. You get the picture.
California no longer has the resources to subsidize students attending community college for recreational purposes. Prioritizing enrollment for students with a goal and a plan to complete it is smart. They will finish community college faster, freeing up spaces for the next class of high school graduates who can?t find a spot at a UC or Cal State campus, can?t afford the higher fees, or simply prefer the preparation, flexibility, and location of their local community college.
Under the current system, some students are forced to enroll in courses they do not need in order to keep their financial aid and/or their unit count high because the system rewards the accumulation of units with registration priority instead of prioritizing students who are trying to transfer, get a degree, or earn a vocational certificate.
The community college system has an opportunity to reengineer itself with the recent Student Success Task Force recommendations. The recommendations include prioritized enrollment and aligning course offerings. They move us toward? a core value many of us believe:?that the promise of college opportunity is fulfilled only if students are successful at getting through college. Prioritizing our enrollment and course offerings is one way to start students off right and prepare them to cross the finish line.
Michele Siqueiros is the executive director of the Campaign for College Opportunity, a nonprofit organization that works to expand access and success in higher education for California students by promoting policy solutions with the support of a broad-based, bipartisan statewide coalition. She was recently appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to the California Student Aid Commission. She is a board member of the Institute for Higher Education Policy and the Alliance for a Better Community and serves on the core planning team for the Latino Student Success initiative led by Long Beach City College.
Emily Kinner: Plan could force out neediest students
The Student Success Act currently being drafted is of deep concern for many community college students. The legislation is modeled on the Student Success Task Force recommendations recently approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors.
While we believe many of the recommendations would bring positive changes, the California Community College Association of Student Trustees (CCCAST) has voted to oppose this package because, contrary to its stated focus on improving student success, we believe it will have the unintended consequence of pushing out students who are less likely to succeed, therefore superficially improving the success statistics of our system.
The proposed changes to the Board of Governors? fee waivers are one example. In order to continue to qualify for a waiver, students would have to identify a degree, certificate, transfer, or career advancement goal; meet institutional satisfactory progress standards; and have no more than 110 units, not including basic skills and ESL courses. This could make community college unaffordable for our most underserved students, who may take longer to get through college because they have to take time out from school to work in order to support their families. These students end up taking classes they don?t need in order to keep their financial aid, but could wind up with more than 110 units as a result. Without the fee waivers, we are concerned that many of these students will drop out for good. At a recent hearing of the Joint Committee on Higher Education in Sacramento, Assemblymember Marty Block, a Democrat from San Diego, called the recommendation the ?death penalty? for some of our neediest students.
During this time of fiscal crisis, with the toll it has taken on public education in the state of California, we appreciate the need for a reevaluation of how to better serve California Community College students. We also understand that there are greater problems with our government?s fiscal structures that can?t be addressed within the context of the Student Success Task Force.
We respect the efforts and dedication of the task force members during their yearlong deliberations regarding student success, as well as their attempts to remedy the fiscal problems of our community college system. We appreciate that our voices have been heard and have helped in the more positive changes since the first drafts. However, we feel more time is needed to consider proposals in order to make sure we protect our most vulnerable populations because, ultimately, student success will be achieved only when the goal is student access.
Emily Kinner serves as Student Trustee for the Foothill-DeAnza Community College District and President of the California Community College Association of Student Trustees (CCCAST).? She is a Rapapport Intern at the DeAnza Institute for Community and Civic Engagement.? Since 2011, she has led the DeAnza EcoPass Campaign for affordable transportation and served as Coalitions-Coordinator for the ?NO on PROP 23? CalPirg campaign. She is currently an organizer for the ?Occupy for Education at DeAnza? project, advocating for access, equity and affordability in the California Community College System.

Make A Change Blog: ?in a truly loving relationship, each supports ...
?Love only grows by sharing. You can only have more for yourself by giving it away to others." Brian Tracey
We are back for part two of my interview with psychologist and author Susan Apollon, who is sharing her thoughts and insights on love and relationships.
How do you define a healthy relationship?
Apollon: A healthy relationship is one in which each brings to it the truth of who he or she is, which is the only way in which it can continue to thrive. When each partner is living consciously in tune with ? or aligned with ? his or her truths and values, neither feels threatened by the other. Rather, each feels quite safe in the relationship, comforted that each has permission and is giving the other permission to live in accordance with what makes his or her heart sing.
This shared mutual experience allows each to vibrate at such a high level that there can only be room for self-exploration, joy, productivity, spiritual growth and peace.
As a result of the recession, many people have lost their jobs and had to transition into other careers, which can shake their perception of themselves and their self worth. While this is difficult for the person going through the change, those in a relationship with them can also feel the stress. What advice do you have for both parties so that the relationship survives the shift?
Apollon: Good question!! When you are in a relationship and one or both of you are going through shifts or changes in your career, keep in mind that a healthy relationship is one in which two individuals who are each secure in their sense of who they are come together because of their caring for and love of one another and not because of the ?hat? they may be wearing at the time.
In other words, those of you who are grounded, have a good sense of your values and are able to live in alignment with your values, recognize that you are more than the title of your job. You have a deeper sense of your identity.
Furthermore, in a truly loving relationship, each supports the other from a place of unconditional acceptance in which the title of job you have or do not have is not an issue. Only unconditional love and acceptance represent your bottom line.
The stresses of life become the challenges in which you are tested, as the oak tree is tested by hurricane force winds, to stay rooted and aware of your inner resources, and, so often, to discover that you have the power to survive and thrive. When going through such challenges, remember to ask yourself: What is this teaching me? What am I needing to learn from this experience?
By asking such questions, you change your perspective. Actually, you grow spiritually, allowing you to be more aware of your Higher Guidance and the possibility that there is a reason for what is occurring. You begin to shift to a ?feel better? vibration, one in which you are more likely to shift from fear to one of trust that you will have what you need. When both parties in the relationship can honor such perspectives, each feels better.
You talk about the importance of letting others know how important they are to us. What are some strategies we can use to keep from taking these relationships for granted?
Apollon: The keys to living a beautiful life are consciousness regarding how you are feeling and what you are thinking ? and choosing love. Everything begins with intention ? your intention to come from love, to be love, to act lovingly and compassionately.
Begin and end your day with writing, reading or verbalizing your intention to live your day by choosing love. Use your imagination to anticipate situations in which you will be with others and , in your mind?s eye, see yourself feeling and being loving with them. Also, focus on the loving qualities of the other person ? qualities which bring out the love you feel for them.
Additionally, stop and ask yourself: How might my life might be or feel if I did not have the other individual (on whom I am focusing) in my life? By doing this, we usually stop taking for granted these precious relationships
Finally, too many of us assume others know how we feel. If you love or care for someone deeply, friend or lover, tell them how you are feel. Let them know how much you value them, love them and what you love about them. All of us need to hear this from one another ? or, at least, to have some expression of being loved by another.
What are the some important takeaways you want people to understand about nurturing and enhancing relationships?
Apollon: Relationships are an essential part of life in which we are able to provide both ourselves and the other the elements needed for us to fully potentiate: that is, to discover who we are, what we value and why we are here.
One of the keys to living a rich and joyful life is knowing who we are (what we value and unconditionally love and accept about ourselves) and being sure to love ourselves enough to honor and nurture the needs of our own soul ? first ? before engaging in a relationship and looking for the other to complete us.
To be clear about this: It is our job and responsibility to first learn to meet our own needs, be able to stand securely alone before we enter a partnership. As soon as we create a dependence on another to complete ourselves, we have weakened our own sense of self, and, at the same time, weakened the relationship as well.
To go a step further, in knowing who you are, and your values, it is in your best interest to lovingly treat yourself compassionately when something goes wrong, rather than be unmercifully judgmental and self-critical. Release the need to be perfect and allow yourself the freedom to make a mistake.
Remember the question: What is this teaching me? And, when you can do this with yourself, you will be better able to enter into a relationship with a nonjudgmental and? noncritical attitude, essential for a healthy partnership.
Once in a relationship, to maintain and enhance the nature of your relationship, there needs to be a balance of continuing to honor your values and to do what you need for the growth of your own soul with doing what is needed to honor the needs, values and desires of the other.
Do not sell yourself short ? something so many do. Here is where you need to maintain an awareness of your intuitively sensing at the level of the heart what feels right to you ? and what does not.
You are each unique individuals, with your own passions, loves and personality. Support the other in his or her hobbies, interests and desires ? as long as it does not drain the energy of the relationship or you. If it does, you need to compassionately and sensitively express your feelings with the other, seeking ways to find a compromise or more balanced way of handling the situation.
Always tune in to your own heart and gut ? and listen, listen, listen to your own inner guidance regarding how the relationship is feeling.
All relationships are enhanced by you choosing to love and accept the other in your life unconditionally. Furthermore, if things irritate or annoy you, notice the feeling and thought, feel the emotion and then breathe it out and choose another quality, about your partner that feels so much better and sweeter on which to focus.
Also, what you choose to focus on determines how you will feel. So, again, intend to focus on what you love about the other and release what is bothering you. Do your best not to get too serious. Be light, integrate humor into your relationship and be sure to share experience shared humor, laughter and smiles ? all.
Finally, everything rests on your perspective. If you can ask yourself questions such as: What do I need to learn here? Or How would I feel if this were reversed and I were in my partner?s position? ? then you are gifting yourself with the ability to gain a different perspective and, thereby, shift to a higher vibration and feel much better.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Our thanks to Susan Apollon for her insights and advice. For the rest of the month, focus on sharing the love, treating yourself as well as all those you might with kindness and generosity.?
We are all travelers in this world?do your part to make the journey softer and more peaceful for everyone.
Important Apps and Cellular Accessories of a Wireless Phone ...
Smart phones have various uses, designed to help its user to accomplish his or her tasks and goals. Not only does it makes us able to communicate with our friends and families, it also has many features and functionalities that enables us to accomplish our various tasks. This makes the smart phone a truly vital mobile device.
Smart phone users, whether they may be an ordinary person, or a businessman (or businesswoman), will not deny the use of these smart phones in their everyday lives. With smart phones, they can watch their favorite movies, as well as play games, and surf the Internet. Also, news from all around the world are delivered straight to your smart phone, including various business news and trends, as well as the latest sports games and accompanying scores. With a smart phone, you no longer need a computer or a laptop in order to access ready information, as smart phones can do it all for you!
Besides the things listed above, smart phones can also help you become a more organized person. As an example, smart phones can help you with your meetings and appointments, reminding you of these important events as soon as it is about to happen. With these functionalities, as well as the use of some apps, you can easily remind yourself of these important activities (meetings and appointments). Never again will you be late for all these appointments with the help of your smart phone!
A good example of a smart phone?s functionality being able to help you to become more organized is its alarm clock and organizer functionalities. While the idea may be a little bit simple, both of them work and may help you become more organized. With the built-in organize functionality, you can write and list all the important events of your daily life, just like you would with a normal organizer, except smart phones have the ability to remind you of it (through an alarm). The alarm clock functionality of the smart phone is also very useful, as smart phones have these features that can play your favorite song as an alarm, letting you wake up in a better mood.
If both of these functionalities does not work for you, then you can make use of a smart phone?s many applications to help you keep up with your daily activities. A good example of an application that will help you is Evernote. Evernote lets you store notes, and also enable you to store voice recordings in order to remind yourself of your appointments. It also enables the user to tag photos to a specific location, suggesting that an important event or activity will take place in there. And the best part about Evernote is that it is completely free to download anytime.
Keeping yourself organized with the use of smart phone is but only a fraction of the many functionalities of a smart phone. Of course, making use of BlackBerry accessories such as cell phone covers, battery packs, and the like can boost the effectiveness of these smart phones. These are also available in BlackBerry Torch 9860 accessories as well as BlackBerry Curve 9350 accessories to give you more option when it comes to equipping your smart phone. Using these accessories will not only boost its effectiveness, but also protect it as well from possible damages. Make sure to opt for these Apple accessories as well if you plan to use your smart phone to keep you organized in your daily activities.
Why Are Caribbean Cruises So Popular? - Travel - EzineMark
When many people think of a cruise they conjure up and image of sailing along a hot and tropical part of the world while basking in the sun and enjoying an exotic culture. Indeed, it is to parts of the world such as the Caribbean that many people do indeed decide to spend their cruise holiday on and they are immensely popular with thousands of people every year. However, what should you expect when it comes to taking a cruise holiday in the Caribbean and why will it be something that you are unlikely to forget in your lifetime?
Many people decide to take a cruise to this part of the world during their winter months as the temperature and the climate of the Caribbean is always generally warm and most of the area will bask in the warm and tropical sunshine all year round with just a few days of rainfall.
Indeed, it is the fact that you can go to this part of the world in January and receive almost the same weather as you can if you went in July which brings so many people to the location year after year. However, one good tip is to be very liberal with your use of sunscreen as there is nothing worse than having a holiday blighted by sunburn and it is very easy to do so in this part of the world.The beauty about a cruise to the Caribbean is in all the different things that you can actually do while you are there. For example, you can simply sit and soak up the good weather out on deck ? and who would blame you ? or you can go on the many excursions that this type of cruise holiday offers such as a trip to the Grand Caymen that features the likes of snorkelling, catamarans and tours around the island itself.
Such is the proximity to central America that you can visit the country of Belize and go cave tubing.The fact is that there is little doubt that a cruise to the Caribbean is among the most popular of the cruise destinations worldwide and it is testament to the fact that so many people go on them every year. If you are looking for something exotic and different from what you would normally experience on a holiday then look no further than a cruise around the Caribbean and be a part of all that it has to offer.
BERLIN (AP) ? Germany's president resigned Friday in a scandal over favors he allegedly received before becoming head of state, creating a major domestic distraction for Chancellor Angela Merkel as she grapples with Europe's debt crisis.
Chritian Wulff announced his resignation a day after the slow-burning affair escalated dramatically with a request by prosecutors for Parliament to lift his immunity from prosecution over his relationship with a film producer in his previous job as governor of Lower Saxony. Those benefits allegedly included paying for a luxury hotel stay in 2007.
Wulff said Germany needs "a president who is supported by the confidence not just of a majority of citizens, but a wide majority."
"The developments of recent days and months have shown that this confidence, and therefore my ability to act, have been lastingly impaired," a somber Wulff said in a brief statement at the president's Bellevue palace, with his wife, Bettina, at his side.
Merkel, who called off a trip to Rome to address the situation in Berlin, voiced "deep regret" at his resignation. She moved quickly to limit the fallout and try to ensure a smooth succession, saying she would seek an agreement with the main opposition parties on the next president.
Wulff is stepping down after less than two years in the job. He was Merkel's candidate for the largely ceremonial presidency in 2010; before that, he was a deputy leader of her conservative party and the governor of Lower Saxony state.
The speaker of the upper house of Parliament ? Bavarian governor Horst Seehofer, a member of Merkel's conservative bloc ? now takes over the presidential duties on an interim basis, mostly signing legislation into law.
A special parliamentary assembly made up of lower-house lawmakers and representatives of Germany's 16 states will have to elect a successor within 30 days.
Merkel's center-right coalition, which is prone to infighting, has only a wafer-thin majority in that assembly.
The chancellor quickly signaled she didn't want to risk failing to get a candidate elected, saying the governing parties will consult among themselves and then immediately approach the opposition Social Democrats and Greens.
"We want to conduct talks with the aim, in this situation, of being able to propose a joint candidate for the election of the next German president," Merkel told reporters.
It wasn't immediately obvious who might attract consensus support. Wulff emerged as president from a messy election in 2010 in which the opposition's candidate, well-regarded former East German human rights activist Joachim Gauck, drew several votes from Merkel's coalition.
The Wulff scandal hasn't yet had any impact on Merkel's popularity, which has been running high amid her hard-nosed leadership of the eurozone debt crisis.
"Wulff's resignation should not have any direct impact on German economic policies (or) on the debt crisis management," said Carsten Brzeski, an economist at ING.
The primary role of Germany's president is to serve as a moral authority, and Wulff's authority already had been eroded before prosecutors in Hannover, Lower Saxony's capital, made their move on Thursday.
They asked for Parliament to lift Wulff's immunity ? an unprecedented move against a German president ? saying there is "initial suspicion" that Wulff improperly accepted benefits from a German film producer friend, David Groenewold. The prosecutors said Groenewold is also under suspicion.
It was the latest in a steady drip of allegations that have besieged the president over the past two months.
The affair kicked off in mid-December, when it emerged that Wulff had received a large private loan from a wealthy businessman friend's wife in his previous job as state governor.
That was followed in January by intense criticism over a furious call he made to the editor of Germany's biggest-selling newspaper before it reported on the loan. Neither of those things, however, resulted in an investigation.
Wulff said in his resignation he was convinced he would be fully cleared of any wrongdoing.
"I have always behaved legally correctly in the offices I held," he said. "I have made mistakes, but I was always honest."
Wulff's longtime spokesman, Olaf Glaeseker ? whom the president fired in December ? is also under investigation on corruption allegations in connection with the organization of business conferences.
