Spectacular jets powered by the gravitational energy of a super massive black hole in the core of the elliptical galaxy Hercules A illustrate the combined imaging power of two of astronomy's cutting-edge tools, the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3, and the recently upgraded Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in New Mexico.

Some two billion light-years away, the yellowish elliptical galaxy in the center of the image appears quite ordinary as seen by Hubble in visible wavelengths of light. The galaxy is roughly 1,000 times more massive than the Milky Way and harbors a 2.5-billion-solar-mass central black hole that is 1,000 times more massive than the black hole in the Milky Way. But the innocuous-looking galaxy, also known as 3C 348, has long been known as the brightest radio-emitting object in the constellation Hercules. Emitting nearly a billion times more power in radio wavelengths than our Sun, the galaxy is one of the brightest extragalactic radio sources in the entire sky.

The VLA radio data reveal enormous, optically invisible jets that, at one-and-a-half million light-years wide, dwarf the visible galaxy from which they emerge. The jets are very-high-energy plasma beams, subatomic particles and magnetic fields shot at nearly the speed of light from the vicinity of the black hole. The outer portions of both jets show unusual ring-like structures suggesting a history of multiple outbursts from the super massive black hole at the center of the galaxy.

The innermost parts of the jets are not visible because of the extreme velocity of the material, which causes relativistic effects that beam the light away from us. Far from the galaxy, the jets become unstable and break up into the rings and wisps.

The entire radio source is surrounded by a very hot, X-ray-emitting cloud of gas, not seen in this optical-radio composite.

Hubble's view of the field also shows a companion elliptical galaxy very close to the center of the optical-radio source, which may be merging with the central galaxy. Several other elliptical and spiral galaxies that are visible in the Hubble data may be members of a cluster of galaxies.Hercules A is by far the brightest and most massive galaxy in the cluster.

Scientists pair blood test and gene sequencing to detect cancer

Thursday, November 29, 2012

Scientists at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center have combined the ability to detect cancer DNA in the blood with genome sequencing technology in a test that could be used to screen for cancers, monitor cancer patients for recurrence and find residual cancer left after surgery.

"This approach uses the power of genome sequencing to detect circulating tumor DNA in the blood, providing a sensitive method that can be used to detect and monitor cancers," says Victor Velculescu, M.D., Ph.D., professor of oncology and co-director of the Cancer Biology Program at Johns Hopkins.

A report describing the new approach appears in the Nov. 28 issue of Science Translational Medicine. To develop the test, the scientists took blood samples from late-stage colorectal and breast cancer patients and healthy individuals and looked for DNA that had been shed into the blood.

The investigators applied whole-genome sequencing technology to DNA found in blood samples, allowing them to compare sequences from cancer patients with those from healthy people. The scientists then looked for telltale signs of cancer in the DNA: dramatic rearrangements of the chromosomes or changes in chromosome number that occur only in cancer cells.

No signs of cancer-specific chromosome changes were found in the blood of healthy individuals, but the investigators found various cancer-specific alterations in the blood of all seven patients with colon cancer and three patients with breast cancer. Using specialized bioinformatic approaches, they were able to detect these alterations in a small fraction of the millions of DNA sequences contained in the blood sample.

"This is proof of the principle that genome sequencing to identify chromosomal alterations may be a helpful tool in detecting cancer DNA directly in the blood and, potentially, other body fluids," says Rebecca Leary, a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins. "But larger clinical trials will be needed to determine the best applications of this approach."

The investigators note that there may be less circulating DNA in early stage cancers, and, thus, these would be more challenging to detect without more extensive sequencing. As sequencing costs decrease, the investigators expect that detecting earlier-stage cancers may become more feasible.

Velculescu says that additional research will focus on determining how the new test could help doctors make decisions on treating patients. For example, the blood test could identify certain chromosomal changes that guide physicians to prescribe certain anti-cancer drugs or decide patient enrollment in clinical trials for drugs that target specific gene defects. Currently, physicians use cellular material biopsied from the original tumor to make these decisions, but tumor material can often be inaccessible or unavailable.

The Johns Hopkins study builds on the team's earlier work using genomic sequencing of DNA in the blood to find rearrangements of chromosomes. The previous work required samples of the original tumor and knowledge of DNA changes in that tumor to find those same changes in the blood. This new test has no need for original tumor samples and includes an analysis of changes in the copy number of chromosomes.

"It's an evolution of technologies we're developing for cancer diagnosis, and, by combining our knowledge, we can build better ways to detect disease," says Luis Diaz, M.D., an oncologist and director of the Swim Across America laboratory at Johns Hopkins.

Students at Layton Junior High get their game on | The Salt Lake ...

(Carol Lindsay | The Salt Lake Tribune) Devin Smith and Miriam Wilson play Ingenious during an after-school board games club at Layton Junior High.

After-school club ? Teacher Stephen Olson loves sharing his passion for board games.

Layton ? Growing up, Stephen Olson loved board games ? all kinds of board games.

He played them with his family and friends. When he went to college at the University of Utah, he started a board game club with fellow students.

Eventually Olson?s friends gave up board games for girlfriends, wives, children and other activities, and the club died out. But Olson?s love for games never diminished.

Fast forward to 2012, and Olson is a math teacher at North Layton Junior High. It?s his first year on the job, and he discovered there is no math club, so he volunteered to supervise one. He then discovers there is no chess club. It?s one of the few board games he doesn?t love, so he asked his administration if he could have a combination chess and board game club.

They consented.

On Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, the board game club meets after school from three to five. Olsen is a happy teacher?he gets the chance to play board games and share his knowledge and love of the game with students.

Olsen visited his parents? home and retrieved an assortment of his favorite games from youth including Ingenious, Small World and Tsuro. Other students play trading card games and still others play chess.

"I can?t resist playing games," Olson said. "I play while I?m correcting papers."

The games help students with reassigning skills and logic. Small World teaches them about combination and how things can synergize or work against one another. Olson said the students also have to learn to put on their poker faces when playing.

While the majority of game playing is friendly, tension can break out.

story continues below

"Small World gets a little heated," Olson said.

Seventh-grader Alex Chipman loves the structure of board games.

"I have Asperger?s so this is one of the few times I can open up and enjoy myself," said Alex, who flits around the room checking out all the games. "I don?t like it when people don?t follow the rules. Here I don?t have to worry about people going against the rules because if they don?t follow them, the game won?t work."

Alex?s father, David Chipman, is a resource teacher at North Layton Junior High. He enjoys having Alex participate in the club. "It keeps him occupied and forces him to interact socially," he said. "I think it gives the kids a way of expressing their own personality without having to be afraid of what anybody else thinks about it because they all have a shared interest in the games. If you are passive or aggressive in your play it?s OK, it?s a game, and no one gets hurt."

Eighth-grader Miriam Wilson has always loved board games, and she has not missed a single day of club. At home she played Monopoly and Sorry. The club has introduced her to new games.

"I like playing with other people," Miriam said. "After I?ve played with them for a while, I know what they are thinking and what their next move is going to be."

At another table sit the trading-card gamers. Two brothers, Braden and Cameron Putnam, are in the club. They enjoy playing games with each other and their brother, but they joined the game club to play against new people.

FDA advisory panel backs efficacy of J&J TB drug

(Reuters) - An advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday voted that data suggest an experimental Johnson & Johnson drug for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis is effective, the drugmaker said.

The medicine, called bedaquiline, is a member of a new class of drugs that target adenosine triphosphate synthase, an enzyme the tuberculosis bacterium needs to generate its energy.

J&J said the panel of outside medical experts, in a vote of 18 to 0, found that trial data support the efficacy of bedaquiline in adults, taken in combination with standard treatments.

In September, the FDA granted priority review of the medicine, based on data from two mid-stage trials that tested it among patients with tuberculosis that is resistant to standard drugs.

J&J is hoping the agency will grant accelerated approval of the drug, on the basis of favorable data from mid-stage trials. The company plans to begin a larger Phase 3 study in the fourth quarter.

In a pair of completed Phase 2 trials, two doses of the medicine were tested for 24 weeks, in combination with standard treatments, followed by continuation of standard therapy for a year to 18 months.

The planned larger trial will involve nine months of treatment with bedaquiline, in combination with standard drugs, compared with standard drugs alone for the same period. The total nine-month treatment period would be far shorter than the current 18- to 24-month treatment period for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis drugs recommended by the World Health Organization, J&J said.

Cowen and Co has forecast peak annual sales of $300 million for bedaquiline, which would make it a fairly modest product for the diversified healthcare company.

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis is caused by strains of the bacterium that have become resistant to at least isoniazid and rifampin, the two most potent drugs for TB.

Resistance to anti-TB drugs can occur when they are misused or mismanaged, for instance when patients don't complete their full course of treatment or when doctors prescribe the wrong treatment, wrong dose or length of time taking the drugs.

An estimated 8.7 million people in 2011 fell ill with tuberculosis - which is spread by coughing and sneezing -- while 1.4 million died from the disease, according to the World Health Organization. About 310,000 cases of multidrug-resistant TB were reported the same year, the organization said, with almost 60 percent in India, China and Russia.

10-year-old girl's laptop confiscated after copyright offense

20 hrs.

Police in Helsinki?seized?the laptop of a young girl during a search of her family's home last week, according to her father.?The alleged?offense? Using the?popular BitTorrent website The Pirate Bay to download a single album.

Last year, 9-year-old Julietta?came across a torrent on The Pirate Bay after searching on Google?for Finnish pop star Chisu's latest album. The download failed to work, and she and her father went and bought the album together shortly afterwards.?Unbeknownst to them,?Finland's Copyright Information and?Anti-Piracy Centre (known as CIAPC, as well as its Finnish acronym, TTVK) had already?taken notice.

The events are related by the girl's father,?Aki Wequ Nylund,?in?a public?Facebook post. (Though Google Translate's Finnish is not very good, an account of the translated?story?was posted at copyright and BitTorrent news blog?TorrentFreak.)

This spring, a letter arrived from the TTVK?alleging that the Nylund's account had been linked to a copyright infringement. The letter gave the option to pay a settlement of ?600 and sign a non-disclosure agreement ? a common tactic used by copyright holders that removes the need for formal charges.

Nylund contacted the?TTVK?lawyer to contest the matter, but?the TTVK continued its pursuit of damages. Last Tuesday morning, he found a pair of Finnish police officers standing at his doorstep.

The police presented a search?warrant, entered, and identified the now 10-year-old?girl's Winnie?the?Pooh-decorated laptop as the object of their search, and confiscated it.

Unsurprisingly, the events have drawn criticism locally and abroad. Finnish Internet rights watchdog Electronic Frontier Finland denounced the actions of the TTVK in a statement and blog post, calling attention to the arbitrary nature of the settlements and their use?as a scare tactic. They also point out that?Nylund's acknowledgment?in this case notwithstanding, an IP address used to track an infringement cannot be linked to a person's identity.

The TTVK's executive director defended the actions in comments to Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat, saying that TTVK and the police were only working to enforce the law.?

Chisu, the pop star whose album was at the center of the controversy, expressed in a Facebook post that she supported copyright law but apologized for the situation.

Niko?Nordstr?m, CEO of Warner Music Finland, acknowledged (also via Chisu's Facebook page)?the limits of IP-based enforcement, but said?"this procedure is currently the only way to tackle illegal downloading" (translation by Google).

Had the TTVK known that the infringing party in this situation was a young?girl, might they?have taken a softer approach? In past cases,?U.S. media associations have not?made accommodations for minors, either.

As for Julietta's lost laptop, an anonymous benefactor sent a brand-new MacBook Pro to replace it. Her father reports that she is already putting it to use, playing online with her friends. An administrator at The Pirate Bay promised VIP privileges to her as well if she wants them?? ?although after this experience, it would be understandable if she opted not to take advantage of the offer.

Fisker Automotive names ex-GM marketing chief Ewanick to post

(Reuters) - Green-car startup Fisker Automotive named former General Motors Co and Hyundai Motor Co <005380.KS> marketing executive Joel Ewanick as interim chief commercial officer, Fisker said on Monday.

Ewanick was ousted as the global marketing chief at GM in July after serving in that position for a little more than two years.

Fisker recently hired Ewanick as a marketing consultant and he will remain a consultant even as he takes over as the chief commercial officer, a company spokesman said.

Ewanick will replace Richard Beattie, who is retiring.

Tony Posawatz, Fisker Automotive's chief executive, said "as we seek to appoint a long-term successor, there is no one better than Joel, with his wealth of motor industry experience and knowledge to guide us through this interim period. I am delighted to welcome him to the Fisker team."

When Ewanick left GM, the No.1 U.S. automaker said that Ewanick had "failed to meet the expectations that the company has for its employees."

People familiar with the situation said Ewanick was fired for not properly disclosing as much as a third of the cost of a $559 million sponsorship deal with English soccer club Manchester United, Reuters reported in early August.

Ewanick was credited by GM executives for raising consumer awareness of the automaker's four brands - Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC. At Hyundai, he led the Korean automaker's U.S. marketing efforts as its sales steadily climbed, before he went to GM.

Ewanick joins Fisker near the end of a year in which it has had multiple problems, including product quality and financial setbacks. In August, Fisker recalled 2,400 of its plug-in hybrid Karma, which sells for more than $100,000.

Fisker is developing a less expensive second model called the Atlantic.

First Report Showing State-by-State COPD Rates Published

For the first time, the federal government has compiled and released data showing the age-adjusted prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in each state. Researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were responsible for the project.

The age-adjusted prevalence of this illness varies a great deal among the states, according to Medical News Today. The 2011 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey shows a prevalence rate of less than 4 percent in Minnesota and Washington state. Alabama and Kentucky, however, have a rate of more than 9 percent.

COPD is a chronic disorder that worsens over time, says the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. Patients typically experience coughing, significant amounts of mucus, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest, wheezing, and a number of other symptoms.

A majority of COPD patients are current or former smokers. Other suspected culprits are long-term exposure to irritants like dust, chemical fumes, and air pollution.

In addition to providing nationwide prevalence data, 21 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico answered questions about diagnosis and quality of life. More than 7 out of every 10 patients received a COPD diagnosis from spirometry, a short test often performed in a doctor's office. According to the Mayo Clinic, this test measures how much air a patient can inhale and exhale and how fast he or she can exhale. Numbers less than average can suggest COPD, asthma, or other respiratory conditions.

The supplementary surveys also showed that nearly 63 percent of patients felt their symptoms had an adverse effect on quality of life. More than half used at least one medication daily to help control their symptoms.

BRFSS subjects were at least 18 years old. State health departments administered surveys under the direction of the CDC. Nearly half a million individuals contributed responses to the 2011 survey, 39,000 of whom said they had COPD.

The BRFSS projected that nationwide, around 15 million adults not living in an institution have COPD, with the greatest prevalence around the Ohio and lower Mississippi rivers. Researchers believe that including older adults in nursing homes and other institutions would have generated higher numbers.

More than 40 percent of those with COPD reported a history of asthma. The prevalence of the disorder decreased as income increased and was lower among individuals who were students, homemakers, and the employed than among those not working.

My husband fights a daily battle with COPD. No one advised him of a radiologist's COPD diagnosis after tests, so he went untreated for several years. Ironically, he spent much of his life in the area of greatest geographical prevalence. For us, the first state-by-state COPD report is an important step in determining the extent and severity of this serious disorder.

Vonda J. Sines has published thousands of print and online health and medical articles. She specializes in diseases and other conditions that affect the quality of life.

Rebels patrol in Congo city as deadline nears

GOMA, Congo (AP) ? Rebels allegedly backed by Rwanda and Uganda stepped up their patrols Monday of this key eastern Congo city that the insurgents seized last week, even as a midnight deadline issued by a regional bloc for them to withdraw loomed.

The Congolese military, which suffered a humiliating defeat when it lost Goma last week, was regrouping in the town of Minova, 60 kilometers (36 miles) to the south, but they appeared disorganized and not in position to launch an assault on Goma.

Residents of Goma, a city of 1 million, anxiously waited to see if the fighters will abide by the deadline that was issued by the International Conference for the Great Lakes Region. The regional group attempting to negotiate an end to the fighting issued the ultimatum on Saturday in Kampala, the capital of neighboring Uganda. The group did not threaten any consequences if the rebels don't depart.

"I am worried the fighting will come back to Goma soon if the army attacks again. Last week, we were so scared. I don't want to go through that again," said Amani Zaliwa, a Goma resident.

The military chief of the M23 rebels would not indicate whether his fighters planned to respect the withdrawal time limit. Reached by telephone at an undisclosed location, he said he was on his way to Kampala for talks.

"We will talk about all of this in coming hours."said Gen. Sultani Makenga, the military leader of the eight-month-old rebel group.

In downtown Goma, armed M23 rebels drove slowly in a Land Cruiser past United Nations troops stationed at traffic circles. Others were on foot patrols on the main arteries. The U.N., which has hundreds of peacekeeping troops stationed in Goma, did not do anything to halt the rebels' advance into the city a week ago, saying that the U.N. mandate did not allow them to engage the fighters.

On Monday, a U.N. transport helicopter buzzed above the shores of this lakeside city, which features low-slung buildings with corrugated tin roofs. For the first time since the rebels took the city, schools reopened Monday, though turnout was low. At one Goma school, only 50 out of 1,400 enrolled students showed up.

Over the weekend in Minova, pickup trucks packed with Congolese army soldiers armed with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades sped through the town. Others walked the streets, looking for food. Some were even selling cigarettes on the side of the road, testimony to the poor pay that government troops receive.

In Minova, Congo Gen. Francois Olenga, who was recently named head of the Congolese army's ground troops, held meetings with area commanders.

"The country is in danger. We cannot defend our country with traitors," Olenga told The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, talks at ending the conflict appeared to be stalled.

M23 soldiers as well as Congolese officials, including President Joseph Kabila, traveled to Uganda, whose President Yoweri Museveni was heading the mediation effort under the banner of the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region. Ugandan Defense Minister Crispus Kiyonga said he was also involved. But Uganda can hardly claim to be totally neutral: Both Rwanda and Uganda back the rebels, according to a U.N. report released on Wednesday.

Rene Abandi, M23's head of external relations, said M23 representatives met with the Congolese president in a tense, two-hour meeting attended by Museveni. The Congolese government, however, denied that it has had any direct negotiations with the M23. Government spokesman Lambert Mende said on Monday that there will be no talks with the rebels until they leave Goma.

M23 is made up of hundreds of soldiers who deserted the Congolese army in April. Since then the rebels have occupied vast swaths of territory in mineral-rich eastern Congo. The rebels accuse Congo's government of failing to honor the terms of a 2009 peace deal that incorporated them into the national army.

Create junk Facebook, Twitter accounts to get discounted stuff

via Lifehacker

By Adam Dachis, Lifehacker

Tons of companies offer discounts and "free" stuff in exchange for posting a little ad on your Twitter or Facebook page. While it may be a good deal, you don't necessarily want to clutter up your social media feeds with a bunch of ads. The solution?

Create junk accounts specifically for the purpose. You can create an account with whatever name you like. When it comes time to sell a spot on your feed for a free coffee or app, just use the junk account you created instead of your primary one. While this might be a little disingenuous, you're still helping the company get the word out without annoying your friends with an advertisement written by someone else.

Note: Using a fake name on Facebook is a violation of the site's policies, so you do run the risk of getting your "spam" profile disabled. Twitter, as this Giga Om story points out, doesn't care what your real name is.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) ? After the first overtime game in the Bedlam rivalry, a wild celebration on Owen Field and yet another 500-yard passing game, it all settled in for Landry Jones.

His last home game with Oklahoma was over, and what a way to go out.

Jones threw three touchdown passes and Brennan Clay scored on an 18-yard run in overtime to lift the 14th-ranked Sooners to a 51-48 win against No. 22 Oklahoma State in the Bedlam rivalry on Saturday.

"No better way," Jones said. "God blessed me so much tonight to be able to go out like this.

"There's no better way to go out."

The Sooners (9-2, 7-1 Big 12) never led during regulation, wiping out double-digit deficits in both halves. Backup quarterback Blake Bell tied it with 4 seconds left on a 4-yard keeper on fourth-and-1 after Jones directed the first 16 plays of an extended drive.

The victory kept alive Oklahoma's chances for at least a share of the Big 12 championship. The Sooners could win it outright by beating TCU next week if No. 7 Kansas State loses to Texas.

"Football's a crazy game," Jones said. "There's up sand downs, good and bad. You have to stay somewhere in that middle ground, realizing who you are and what you're capable of and what type of offense you are.

"When you need a play, just go out and make it."

On the Sooners' second play, Clay got through traffic at the line of scrimmage and then broke through attempted tackles by Daytawion Lowe and Shamiel Gary to score the game-winner and set off an unusually giddy celebration on Owen Field.

The Sooners had lost only three times at home in Bob Stoops' first 13 seasons but dropped games this season against Kansas State and Notre Dame.

Players ran around the field in celebration, joining fans in the stands in leaping up and down when "Jump Around" was blared over the loudspeaker.

"It always feels great to go out on a win," Jones said.

Joseph Randle ran for 113 yards and matched his career-high with four touchdowns for Oklahoma State (7-4, 5-3), which settled for Quinn Sharp's 26-yard field goal in overtime.

Last season, the Cowboys blew out Oklahoma 44-10 to snap an eight-game losing streak in the series and win their first Big 12 championship outright.

Oklahoma State fans rushed the field and tore down the goalposts after that win. A year later, the elation was replaced with disappointment.

"The truth is the better your program gets, the more success you have and the more highly regarded you are, the harder it is to lose," coach Mike Gundy said.

"In a World Series, a Super Bowl or a state championship game when you lose it's a crushing blow. And the only reason is because you've taken it to another level. For the most part, this program's at a different level."

With his second straight 500-yard passing game, Jones surpassed Texas Tech's Graham Harrell to become the Big 12's career passing leader. He also became the first Bowl Subdivision quarterback ever to throw for 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns in four seasons.

He led Oklahoma's first fourth-quarter comeback victory in five years a week earlier, beating West Virginia 50-49 on a pass to Kenny Stills with 24 seconds left.

"What more do you want from the guy? The guy was, again, fabulous out there tonight," Sooners coach Bob Stoops said. "He threw the ball all over. He threw it well, throwing bullets everywhere."

Jones finished 46 of 71, both school records, with an interception.

Clint Chelf threw for 240 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 63 yards for the Cowboys, who were trying to win on Owen Field for only the ninth time but couldn't protect an early 14-0 lead or an 11-point edge in the second half.

"There were a lot of big plays. You know there's going to be ups and downs throughout the game, so we were prepared for that," Chelf said. "We just tried to answer every time they did something and they just made one more play than us."

Jalen Saunders tied it at 38 on the second play of the fourth quarter, dodging three early tackles and racing 81 yards up the Sooners' sideline to score on a punt return.

Oklahoma State answered two possessions later, going 77 yards and taking a 45-38 lead on J.W. Walsh's 2-yard keeper with 10:41 remaining. The Cowboys sacked Jones on third down and forced an incomplete pass on fourth down to get the ball back with 7:07 to play, but went three-and-out to give it right back and set up Oklahoma's tying drive.

"We're strong," Clay said. "We're strong-willed and we can face adversity. We can go through any obstacle, and we know this offense is very potent."

Qatar man suffered from new virus, lab says

BERLIN (AP) ? A patient from Qatar has been confirmed with a new virus related to SARS, while health officials are investigating whether it may have spread between humans after close contact in Saudi Arabia.

Germany's Robert Koch Institute said Friday that the Qatari patient fell ill in October with severe respiratory problems. He was brought to Germany for treatment in a specialty clinic, recovered after a month and was released this week.

As a precaution, the World Health Organization advised medical authorities around the world to test any patients with unexplained pneumonias for the new coronavirus, from a family of viruses that cause the common cold as well as SARS. Previously, WHO had only advised testing patients who had been to either Qatar or Saudi Arabia ? the two countries with all six reported cases.

"Until more information is available, it is prudent to consider that the virus is likely more widely distributed than just the two countries which have identified cases," WHO said.

WHO reported a cluster of four cases in October in a family living in the same household in Saudi Arabia, in which a father and son both fell ill with symptoms including pneumonia, fever and respiratory problems. The father, 70, died after developing renal failure. His son was hospitalized shortly afterwards and died four days later after multi-organ failure. The son was confirmed with the coronavirus while the father's results are pending.

Two other people in the same family got sick but both recovered. One was confirmed with the coronavirus while the other tested negative.

Health officials always keep a close eye on any clusters of unusual viruses within families, since they may suggest the possibility of human-to-human spread. Still, that is usually due to close contact in which family members are looking after sick loved ones and does not suggest the virus can be easily transmitted.

Experts aren't sure how the virus is spreading but suspect it may be jumping directly to humans from animals like bats, camels or goats. In the latest case from Qatar, however, the patient had no known links to animals.

WHO said Saudi officials were currently examining how its last cases got infected. "Investigations are ongoing to look at all sorts of exposure, including the possibility of human-to-human transmission," said spokeswoman Fadela Chaib. So far, there is no evidence the virus can spread easily between people.

The Koch institute says there is no evidence the Qatari patient treated in Germany infected anyone else in the country. "The Robert Koch Institute's assessment of the risk remains that the possibility of becoming infected in Germany is very low," the institute said.

About 8,500 people worldwide were affected by SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, in 2003 and about 900 died.

CinemaNow adds Ultraviolet support to some of its movies

Bestbuy's CinemaNow has started to embed UltraViolet content into their video-streaming service. It's no huge surprise -- given that the retailer is a founding member of DECE -- but a good sign for anyone shoring up a collection of discs with UV digital content. CinemaNow identified compatible content with an Ultraviolet icon (seen above), while the service continues to gradually upgrade its SD content to big-screen friendly full HD. According to some early users, there's some teething issues with links to UV versions, however, suggesting CinemaNow's still tweaking the setup.

(AP) ? Iran lashed out Friday at Turkey for requesting NATO to supply it with Patriot surface-to-air missiles to deploy along the border with Syria, denouncing the step by Ankara as counterproductive.

Iranian parliamentary speaker Ali Larijani made the remarks after a visit to Damascus, a show of support by Tehran to its increasingly diplomatically isolated ally.

"The internal crisis in Syria cannot be solved through the deployment of such weapons," Larijani, who is close to the Islamic Republic's supreme leader, said at a news conference in Beirut where he went after leaving Syria.

Turkey's request earlier this week follows several incidents in which violence has spilled across the border from the civil war in Syria, frequently mortar rounds falling a short distance inside. Patriots would be useful in intercepting ballistic missiles ? a much more serious but still hypothetical threat.

NATO said Wednesday it will consider the request "without delay."

The Syrian Foreign Ministry also criticized the Turkish move, calling it "a new provocative step."

Larijani, who met Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus earlier Friday, said Iran was seeking a peaceful solution to the war in Syria.

"The difference between us and the others when it comes to Syria is that the others want to impose democracy through weapons," he said. "Iran cannot accept or support such a way."

"I don't think democracy can be achieved through rocket propelled grenades," he added.

Iran is Assad's strongest ally in the region, and anti-government activists accuse Tehran of sending both weapons and fighters to Syria.

Syria's conflict erupted in March 2011 with an uprising against Assad's regime, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts, but quickly morphed into a civil war that has since killed more than 40,000 people, according to activists.

In violence around Syria Friday, Islamic extremists, including members of the al-Qaida-inspired Jabhat al-Nusra group, battled with pro-government Kurdish gunmen in the northern town of Ras al-Ayan near the border with Turkey, activists said.

Kurdish activist Mustafa Osso and the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights had no reports of casualties

The Islamic militants entered the town earlier this month and have since clashed almost daily with the Kurdish gunmen. Both factions add to the complexity of Syria's conflict.

When government forces withdrew from Kurdish areas in northeastern Syria in July, they were quickly replaced by Kurdish fighters from the Kurdish Democratic Union Party, or PYD, who would then battle rebels when they pushed their way into predominantly Kurdish areas. The Kurdish group is affiliated with the PKK, rebels fighting for autonomy in the Kurdish-dominated southeast region of Turkey.

The Islamic militants, who are fighting on the side of the rebels, have played a bigger role in the Syrian conflict in recent months and many openly say they want to set up an Islamic state. The opposition is split, with some groups strongly opposed to the influence of extremists.

In Damascus, regime forces shelled the neighborhoods of Tadamon and Hajar Aswad, where rebels and government troops have clashed for weeks, and also raided the central Damascus neighborhood of Bab Sreijeh, arresting several people there, said the Observatory.

In the nearby Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk, activists said a bomb blast killed four people and seriously wounded a member of a faction that has backed Assad in the country's bitter civil war.

The explosion late Thursday was a bomb placed under the car of a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command, the Palestinian group said. It blamed the rebel Free Syrian Army for the attack.

Yarmouk has been pulled into Syria's fighting before, most recently earlier this month when clashes in and around the camp killed and wounded dozens.

When the unrest began, the country's half million Palestinians struggled to stay on the sidelines. But in recent months, many have started supporting the uprising although they insisted the opposition to the regime should be peaceful. Others, like the PFLP-GC, stood by Assad. Earlier this month, the PFLP-GC clashed with anti-government Palestinian gunmen in Yarmouk.

Before meeting with Assad, Larijani met with leaders of the PFLP-GC and other pro-Assad Palestinian groups and discussed the latest Israeli-Hamas spasm of violence in Gaza that ended with an Egyptian-brokered truce on Wednesday. He pledged more Iranian assistance to Palestinians there, said Khaled Abdul-Majid, a Damascus-based Palestinian official who attended the meeting.

Speaking in Lebanon a few hours later, Larijani congratulated the Palestinian people for their "victory" in Gaza which he described as a "tsunami" against Israel.

Elsewhere, the Observatory said the body of Syrian novelist Mohammed Rashid Roweily was found late Thursday in the eastern city of Deir el-Zour, nearly two months after he was kidnapped.

State TV said Roweily was "liquidated by terrorists" ? a term the government uses for the rebels. Syrian authorities deny there is a popular uprising in the country and say the rebels are backed by foreign powers that seek to destroy the country.

Ruwiely, 65, was once the representative of Arab Writers' Union in Deir el-Zour and had written several novels. The Observatory said his decomposed body was found along with those of four others, including a retired army officer. All were kidnapped around the same time.

Journalist Bassil Toufic Youssef, who worked for state TV, was shot dead outside his house in the capital on Thursday, the state SANA news agency said.

In other developments, Qatar, which has backed Syria's rebels in the conflict, invited a newly formed opposition coalition to appoint an ambassador to the Gulf state, the Qatari news agency reported.

The broad coalition ? called the National Coalition of the Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces ? was formed Nov. 11 in Qatar under pressure from the United States for a stronger, more united opposition body to serve as a counterweight to the more extremist forces fighting Assad's regime.

The six-national oil-rich Gulf Cooperation Council and the European Union's 27 foreign ministers recognized the Syrian coalition. Last week, France became the first Western nation to officially recognize the council. President Barack Obama said the U.S. isn't ready to recognize the group as a "government in exile" or to arm it.

'Dancing' finalists talk girl power, Val's Speedo

By Michael Maloney, TODAY contributor

ABC

The "Dancing With the Stars" all-star finalists.

Kelly Monaco and Val Chmerkovskiy?s surfer-flamenco dance on Monday's "Dancing With the Stars" failed to impress the judges, who scored the routine low. But did the pro?s sculpted, Speedo-clad body prompt viewers to vote him through to the finals?

?Nah,? Chmerkovskiy demurred to reporters after the show. ?I think the Speedo might have distracted (voters.)?

So what does he credit getting him and his all-star partner to the finals next week?

?Kelly helped,? he said. ?Her work ethic (helped) the most. (She) is so talented.?

Monaco is happy to share being in the finale with two other female stars -- Shawn Johnson and Melissa Rycroft.

?It?s amazing,? she said. ?It happened, and I embrace girl power.?

Rycroft was nauseated after Tuesday's show, but not because she was nervous about the finals.

?Something?s going around and yeah, I got it this morning,? she said.

Rycroft said that she and pro partner Tony Dovolani, who?s still nursing a back injury, ?make a good combo? and that they planned to take a night off and come in fresh in the morning.

?Now that we know what the competition looks like, we can make our plan of attack for the finals,? she said.

Rycroft?s the only finalist this season who?s never won the coveted mirror-ball trophy, but don?t call her the underdog.

?I don?t want to think of it like that,? she said. ?I can?t. I don?t want to. I just want to go in and say this is our time to show off. Let?s think of what we can do that no one else can at this (point in the) competition.?

Next week's finals will be jam-packed with dancing.

?(There will be) two dances and an ?insta-dance? and we have to do a repeat dance,? Derek Hough, Johnson?s partner, previewed.

While Hough is already a big winner with three mirror ball trophies on his mantel, he thinks that because there are three female celebs competing, it?s truly anyone?s prize to win.

?It?s a very equal playing field,? he offered. ?It?s not like the girls vote for the guys or the guys vote for the girls. They?re all the same gender. It will be really interesting to see how it all plays out.?

Which one of the all-stars are you rooting for in the finals? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.
